| Post subject: | D100 Transmission questions |
So in my search for another A body to replace the totaled 69 Dart. I came across a 1975 D100. Slant six,and the owner stated that its a 4 speed with a "granny" gear. What can you tell me about this trans? I would be buying the truck for a driver, and I dont tow,and would only do light hauling. If I get the truck should I look into replacing the trans with a 833 OD? If I do that what all would I need? Just the trans,or trans/bell/clutch etc... On a side note: Anyone with a D100 with manual steering? How bad is it? I had MS in my 67 Dart GT and it was not bad at all,but im sure it was at least a few hundred lbs lighter than this truck. Thanks guys |

That's a NP435 or some variant of the 435. Good truck trans and it's paired with an 11" clutch. To swap in an A833OD (the only factory-type swap which would help with fuel economy) everything behind the crankshaft has to be changed. Flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, trans, shifter, driveshaft, etc. I'd keep the NP435 and just run 2.94 or 3.23 gears. I did not like the manual steering my my '74 D100. The gear box had a lot of slop and it was just plain heavy. I swapped in power steering and was much happier. |

Thanks Josh! So its pretty strong trans then? Does it have OD? My only plans are some head work,9-9.5 comp, exhaust Super Six with holley 350 and a erson 270,so not anything earth shattering, but I would like to do some spirited driving every now and then. I will start looking for some PS stuff. |

Looks like 4.56 2.28 1.31 1.00,which isnt too bad. There is also a version with a 6.XX First,I hope it does not have that. |

Most NP435s are pretty wide ratio, but some are wider spread than others as you've already found. You probably have the wide ratio version which kinda sucks. Having the 1.66 3rd gear makes for an awful RPM drop into high gear. I do believe you can get the ID off the box and figure out which gear set it has. I wish this image indicated the model years covered. http://www.sweptline.org/forums/downloa ... &mode=view Don't know if this is accurate, but I came across the ratio info: "If your gearbox has its metal ID tag you can determine the ratio as follows; if the tag says 435L it is a 668 ratio box, if it says 435A it is a 456 ratio." |

Thanks again for the info,I guess if it has the 6.XX first trans I can look for the 4.56 to replace it. Not trying to win races, but want something I can use all 4 gears on. Jared |
