I am wanting to take the mechanical fan out and install an electric fan. Is it possible to just take my power source from the fuse box, and find a wire that is on with key and off with key, and have the fan come on without having a relay panel? I dont want a thermostat installed either, I just want the fan to operate when I start the car, and go off when I turn the car off. I know they soak up alot of amps, and was wondering if this would create a problem later. |

This what you want to do is a really bad idea. It's the wrong way to do it. If you do it this way, you will overcool your engine (bad) for a brief time until you do extensive and expensive damage to the car's electrical system. If for whatever reason you want an electric fan, install it correctly. That means a thermostat and a relay. |

Most of the time, on modern cars, the electric fan is not running, unless if the a/c is on. So, unless if you do a lot of low speed driving in the hot weather (possible, given the location), it's a decent chance that you don't need to worry (much) about it. Plus, if you have a stock, low output (by today's standards) altenator, then all the more reason to install it properly--that much less of a drain on the system. I doubt any of the keyed sources off the fuse box will have enough ampacity to run your fan. You would need at a minimum a relay. I'd want one anyway, so as to isolate any issues (think fan failure) from interfering with anything else. |

Also, if what you're hoping to do is reduce parasitic losses by removing the mechanical fan, please explain where the energy is going to come from to run the electric fan full time. Hint: It's the alternator. Now: What powers the alternator? Hint: It's the engine. You will wind up with more parasitic loss, not less. |

Thanks for the info..I guess I will buying a relay station along with a theromstat..I guess the old moto is, do it right the first time, or don;'t do it at all. |
