Yes, if you can find the gear set. The old "direct connection" program had gear sets available in: 4.11, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13. If you find a set, don't even think about running it without a clutch type SG.I have a 3.91 in my 66 Valiant, a 5.13 in a spare rear housing, and a new 4.56 gear set, used SG (with new parts to rebuild it) and a couple of "A" body rear housings. |

Jon, you saw my Cuda, up at Haggerstown. I used to have the 3.91 rear in that car, running just a couple of tenths slower. I have been running that same rear sinse 1974, in different cars. I rebuilt it one time, mainly to install new SG clutches. It has never failed (knock on wood). Personally I find that hard to believe, as my engine make over 325 ft/lbs of torque. Right now I am using a 10x28x15 slick, on that rear in my 66 Valiant. I have an 8 3/4 in my Cuda. On your car, I would sugest you try to find a different rear. The 7 1/4 is stronger then many believe, but it is just too hard to find the parts. It is easier/cheaper to use a different rear, and be less subject to breakage. The only reason I use it, is because I had it left from my stock eliminator days, and I found the other parts for bargain basement prices. |

yes I saw that puppy @ hagerstown you took me out of the elimitations I looked in the rear view mirror as I saw the finish line and then like in a bad dream you flew by me and I was kinda shocked hopping you had run out as I had a nice timed lead and you went on to win all the candy ! dog ! OK I understand the idea of availibity but knowing the 7.25 is 100lbs lighter and can be had free 2cheap I am just doing some research to know them 4.88's would be nice in a light weigh 7.25 SG ps do you run any special fluid in your SG ? |

No. A street SG should use the special additive, but I don't use it. The purpose of the additive is to keep the SG from chattering on turnes. It actually lets the clutches slip slightly. I have my clutches, tightened up.

OK. You got he good SG unit (clutch type with 4 spider gears). Now all you need to do is find the ring and pinion gears, in the ratio you want. |

I would like some big gears. 4.88's up will have tall tires and hopefully an overdrive auto trans... how hard do you think locating gears will be.. I have not done any serious searches and most peeps just go to a diff rear I like the 100lbs weight savings I doubt I can build a slant six that will blow this rear.. and if I do..I will be going FAST ![]() |

If your looking for new... The lowest set Randy's Ring and Pinion lists in the Yukon brand is 4.11's. You may be able to contact Yukon directly to see if they will cut you a set. CJ |

I'm not positive if the R&P from Randy's for the Dakota is the same as the early 7 1/4. I have heard yes, but also heard no. I have never seen the Dakota set so I can't help. Best to ask. The only other thing to do, is go on every Mopar board and ask. They were only available from the Mopar Direct Connection program, as far as I know. |

You mentioned several times that the 7-1/4 is saving you a 100 lbs. What are you using now, a Dana 60. I cant see it being that much lighter than an 8-1/4 or even an 8-3/4. |
