I picked up a NOS slant six windage tray, in its original shipping box, it did not include the mounting hardware,,
I called Mike Jeffery and he asked that I post photos of it as he said he had not seen one in a long time..

What we were talking about is,, when the tray is mounted,, on which side do the open drain slots face?

Like shown in the photos with the open slots on the block welch plug side or do the openings face to the oil pump side?

There is cut out mid way on both sides of the tray,, one for an oil pick up and one for the dip stick? To fit to a truck oil pick up tube there is minor interference that can be easily fixed, and the dip stick goes in through the side of the oil pan, so I will patch in the un used cut out sections.

thanks

The openings of the slots, go toward the oil pump side. The mounting hardware kit is the same as for a 273-340 engine. Make sure you use the washers under the main cap bolts. Compare the length of the bolts in the kit to the length of the slant six bolts. They are too long to use without the washers. I have 4 of those trays, two in engines, and two NOS on the shelf, for new builds. If you need them, I should have the directions someware.

Don't know if it is still available but the hardware kit was part number P3690939

I think the openings would be on the trailing side so the oil flung off the crank would escape. (but I could be wrong)

I would reverse from what you have. The crankshaft spinning would create a vacuum not allowing the oil to flow back into the sump.

thanks that really helps..

so as the crank spins, the intent is to throw the oil through the slot,

1) do these slots look to be the proper width, this part has been setting for some time, and I don't know how "original" it really is

2) is there an problem with the tray contacting the bottom of the oil pan?
one of the photos is a view into the front of the pan. see how close they are.
This truck pan is a rear sump, the front "shelf" of the pan has some slope to it,, but first inch or so has minimal clearance from the inside of the pan to the bottom side of the tray.. I am guessing this same condition would exist at the front and rear of a center sump pan,, but don't know.

thanks

John, you may have to cut and grind on the tray to get it to clear the pan.

John,

Maybe this link will help:

As others have said Clearincing / grinding / bending my be required.
Shoot for ~.060" clearance of moving parts
