Post subject: | Slant six won't start????? |
Hey guys I need some help with my 71 scamp with a slant six. So here is my problem ..... I changed a spun conneting rod bearing, took oil pan off and found the problem and put a new bearing in .10 size , checked it and worked fine. So I put the pan back on and connected everything back up underneth the car. So I went to start the car it has a new carb and it turns over it gets gas and has spark at coil and at plugs but will not fire up it acts like it wants to start but won't. I drove it the in the garage and started it up one more time before doing the work, I am really baffeled..... Can I check timing with out car running?? I did not touch anything up top when I started this project. Any help Anyone????? |

should be able to check time w/o running--hook up a remote start switch to bump the motor over, with the key set to run. Did you mess with the spark plug wires? Did you set the firing order 180 off? When did you put the new carb on? How do you know it's a "good" carb? Have you squirted some gas down the carb, to see if it'll start on that? |

"wants to start": if it's not blowing black smoke, and the timing hasn't jumped (or otherwise changed), then I think it's just not getting enough gas. When you changed the bearing, did you drop the oil pan, or pull the motor out? Sounds like just dropped the pan, nothing touched on the top end. Which makes it a real stumper. I'd still check for stupid stuff. Like some vacuum lines knocked off, Or out of gas. I mean, there's nothing in the bottom end to prevent starting like this; I wonder if it's conincidental that it won't start. Was the spark good and strong, blue in color? |

W/ key switch in run position, check for voltage at coil. wild guess is ballast resistor. Voltage cranking, but not in run position. |

I have installed a petronicks in the distribitor to do away from the points, so the ballast resistor has been take out of the system. So hears a re-cap. I have a good blue spark at coil and a good spark at plugs when motor is turned over, I have plent of gas... never touched top end just replaced connection rod bearing from underneath motor by taking pan off. So my idea is now could it be a wire not completing the circut, if so where would I start??? Thanks for all help and ideas.....

Hmm, I'm going to guess something failed, completely unrelated to the bearing. I'd start at the beginning all over again. Blue spark: good sign. I'd break out a timing light, and make sure it's timed at least near to where it needs to be. I'd probably pull out the other 5 plugs, so it will crank faster; I'd think it'd fire up with any timing from 10ATDC to 20BTDC (numbers are pure SWAG--and I'm not saying it'd run good at those numbers). Then: carb. You said you poured gas down the carb, but it still won't run. If it's got spark, and it's timed near where it ought, then it's mystifying, unless if it is flooding. I'd pull the plugs, make sure they aren't fouled. Then it's onto random stuff: loose carb, spark dying after it catches, potatoe shoved up the exhaust from that neighbor who loves you so much... |
