I am installing a super six air cleaner on my '71 d100 and need some help with the vacuum line routing. I am installing it for both the cold air intake and the ability to pull warm air from around the exhaust manifold upon start-up. I tested the vacuum door for the "pre-heater hose" and it works properly - I think, (with vacuum to the diaphragm it closes the door to cold air and pulls warm through the pre-heat hose) but I am not sure how the vacuum lines are routed.
There are two other places that the vacuum lines can attach to the air cleaner. If I understand it correctly one of them is some type of thermostat that allows vacuum to pass through and close the door to the cold air intake. I'm just not sure which one it is and what the other gizmo is for.

Also I am curious on cold start-up if the engine vacuum drops won't the door open to cold air? Is there some type of reservoir on a factory install?

Thanks

If you don't want to look at the carb manuals in the Engine FAQ, run one vacuum line from the door to the thermostat in the air cleaner base and one from the thermostat to the carb. On cold start up the door should open. If not then the lines are reversed.

There is no reservoir for low vacuum but there is a one way valve. Click on the red link below my name to view direction on the one way valve. At idle you should see 18" or more on your vacuum gauge. I wouldn't worry about low vacuum. Mine works great for as old as it is.......the door opens right away on start up.
