Did you do a tune up? How are all of your fluids? What kind of mpg are you getting in town? 12-16 is about tops. |

This site is full of excellent info found in the the Engine FAQ section. The best thing that will help you is re-reading the distributor recurve thread.... and do it! Plot what you have now with the supplied graphs to make a reference baseline. Then plot your changes. You will see a big difference in low end torque when you apply more advance at lower rpm. THe results are much better mileage. |

Also if you disconnected to smog pump but still have both cats on the truck you are doing more harm than good. |

It would be right under the manifold if you had it. But if the pump was not working, then it wont make a difference. It might be the cause of your poor mpg though. |

Careful on removing cats. Their presence is required in many states for inspection (their operation may or may not be). I know I'm having my reservations about buying a truck that had them cut out (as I'd have to reinstall!). I'd read more threads; standard tuneup, perhaps removal of leanburn, distributor recurve and the like is on order. However, two things: first, I'd actually measure the mpg, over like 3 tanks. Second, I'd read up on changing the rear gearing. It seems many (?) were not happy with a stock slant, A883OD and 3.23 gears. 3.55 is more liked, and 3.91 may not cost that much highway mpg. You might want to double check what rear gears you currently have. |

I didn't read any other replies, but I suggest opening up the exhaust. If it hasn't been done in a while check the operation of the carb and the ignition, check plugs and all fluids. I always thought it was a good idea to have the car working at factory specs before making changes to improve the car. |

on my 83 d-150,,got a real improvement by taking out the lean burn,, replaced that with an old points distributor. The difference in the smoothness of the idle and the willingness of the motor to rev above 3K was noticeable. as part of the prep install to get the motor ready for the overhaul,, put in a HEI and a new distributor to get those issues worked out,, that ran good too. personally I would make sure the carb is tuned up then do ignition work. |

On one of the rear end bolts there is a tag with your differential ratio stamped on it. It is usually on the filler side. |
