Is there any set number of units made?

Seeing the H-Pac was developed for NASCAR the general thinking is that 500 "kits" were made.
The sad thing... by 1963 / 64, the V 8 high H.P. "race" was on and no-one wanted 6 cylinder H-pac stuff.
I have talked to a number of sources that said that the kits "sat on dealer shelfs" for years and that some kits were "thrown in the dumpster" because they simply were not selling.

Given that most of the dumpster item in those days went to a landfill instead of a recycling depot, there might be a chance that a Buck Rogers Archaeologist will find one and think that it was an old style showerhead.

Pretty sad to hear that...Of course I've heard it the other way too:

One of the local guys that used to run Max Wedges back then, stored some parts away in his barn...a few years ago his health was ailing and rather than sell the manifolds he had, or let his drug addicted kids steal them, he had a buddy take a sledgehammer and bust 'em up and take them away as scrap...

Pretty selfish if you ask me.

Here is the only story I have. The man I bought my manifolds from, Charlie Shank, told me this story. Vernon Smoker, brother to Dan Smoker, who would drive super stock cars for Dave Lewis in Newport News VA, bought a new 1961 Lancer from Green Gifford Dodge in Norfolk VA. He had the service department install the intake, exhaust, pistons, cam, valve train and clutch during the week and ran the car at Suffolk Raceway the next weekend. The car was a consistent class winner for a couple of years till Vernon lost interest. After most of the parts were used up, Charlie used the intake and exhaust on a 32 Stude in a hobby stock car. It was a six cylinder class that ran 300 ford and 292 chebies. The 225 lost in the corners but would run them down on the straights. After that he sold me the intake and the exhaust manifolds in 1972.

Post subject:  Hyper Pak stories.

Hello,

I like your story 'hyper_pak'.

I will share mine. And this is what I am told so it could be a little wonky. (until the part where I got my pieces)

The first owner of my HP pieces was at the Daytona races where they won 1st to 7th place. He was so impressed with the cars performance on the race track that he soon purchased a 1960 V200 Valiant sedan and had the kit installed. He kept the car and drove it for a long time. But he did live near the ocean and the Valiant became a moving bucket of rust over the years due to the salt from the sea. When the car became un-roadworthy, he pull the Hyper pak parts off. Put them in the shed and had the sedan towed away. The years past by and one day he decided to clean the shed out and took a whole lot of items, including the hyper pak parts to a local flea market. At the market a gentleman who was really into Chevy stuff saw them. He knew that they weren't Chevy items but thought they looked interesting none the least. After speaking to the seller for a while and finding out they were mopar 6 cylinder items he decided to write down the sellers phone number and went home. Thinking about them over the next few days, he still thought they looked really cool. And would make a nice wall hanging in his shed. So he call the seller, who still had them, made a deal and purchased the hyper pak parts.

Then for the next 15 odd years they made a neat wall display in a Chevy garage.

But finally a Chevy guy has to do what a Chevy guy does. Build another Chevy I guess. So he decided to put the parts he had up for sale to pay for Chevy stuff.

And lucky for me... I happened to see them for sale. I knew what they were... and I made a deal... And then they came home. Now 10 years later they are just about ready to be installed into a 1961 V200 Valiant Station Wagon.

So I really have to thank this one Chevy owner for hanging onto these pieces of mopar history for so long without him knowing really what he had.
...........
It would be interesting to also know how many Original Hyper paks are still out there.

Since we are "story telling" on factory H-Pak units, I will "spin some yarn" on one of the set-up's I owned... for a while.

I purchased a factory Hyper-Pak intake and exhaust manifolds in the late 1980's from an ad listed in the "Parts for Sale" section of the now defunct SSCA "Slanted Views" mag.

I was delighted when the manifolds arrived, they were brand new, never installed manifolds and the exhaust manifold had a silver "powder coating" on them.

I put the exhaust manifolds away, in a safe place and focused on the intake, taking measurements and showing it to foundry people, as I built pattern equipment to have "knock-offs" reproduced.

During this process, I called the seller back and got a "story" that he got the set from a person in the LA area. I tracked down that person and he said that he use to work at a Chrysler dealership, back in the mid sixties. He went on to say that the dealership had a lot of out-dated inventory, including a "few" H-pak kits that sat on the shelf "for years"... until the parts Manager told him to "write off" some of the old inventory & "distroy" the stuff. (hual it out back, un-package the items, tear-up the package labeling and throw everything into the dumpster)
He said ""yes sir" and did all the paperwork, made a phone call to a friend and took "many boxes" out back, un-boxed, ripped, crunched what he could and tossed everything into the dumpster. (under the watchful eye of the parts manager)

Once the task was done and they were back in the building, said friend did some dumpster diving and hauled all the "distroyed" parts home.
They took count of their new found "trash" and sold it off to various people over the years. He said they ended-up with 2 intakes and 3 sets of exhaust, plus some "other stuff".

And yes, the H-Pak manifold set I got out of this "dumpster dive" was instrumental in getting the H-Pak intake reproduced.

So the "fairy tail ending" to this story... I was contacted by RM Restorations last year and they were searching for factory H-Pak stuff.
After some discussions, I sold that set of manifold to them so they could be used on the restoration of the XNR.

Great stry DD! There have to be some more HP storys in the crowd. Lets hear them!

Here is the second part on my stuff. After I got my intake I installed it on my 62 Valiant. Never ran it on the Valiant though. It then went on a 66 Dart, that is the car I perfected my throttle linkage after I drove it with a string through the drivers vent window. I then put it in a 65 Valiant V100. That car with a 3 speed manual was a good sleeper. I ran a dude in a 65 chevy pickup running a 250 inline six, 2 4's, a muncie 4 speed and a 4.10 gear. We ran from a 25 roll cause I could not go down into first. I beat him by 2 car links. Next car it went into was my 64 Barracuda. That car when I started to drag race it ran 14.30 at 95 mph in the quarter. the reason for the Barracuda was it had a 4 speed. I took out the 273 and put in the 225. Then I picked up the 67 Barracuda coupe. That was a 273 to 225 swap also! The 67 was featured in Jan 1989 High Performace Mopar. That car ran a 13.47 at 99.9 mph. I was fishing for 100 but wasn't smart enough to do it. So after I run the intake in the 62 Lancer that will be 8 cars that I know of that had that intake under the hood.

So lets hear them...............................

not real proud of that moment. but hey, it worked! when you are 16 years old some stuff looks pretty hard to overcome.

Post subject:  Exhaust?

I like the looks of the Hyper pak exhaust manifolds. I know there aren't as many of them out there as the intakes, but does anyone have any info on how they work? I'm sure they are much better than a single "stock" manifold, but how do they compare to a set of Clifford shorty's or something like that?

Honestly Doc's Dutra Duals are probably just as good if not better.. You can mount turbos to 'em etc.

HERE IS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE(scroll down a few posts)
