| Post subject: | Exhaust Manifold Bolts |
Is there a Slant 6 Exhaust Manifold Bolt? Where the manifold attaches to the flange. Or can the muffler shop just put on whatever they have laying around? Reason I ask, tonight I was pulling off the intake & exhaust and the nuts and bolts holding on the flange were not SAE or metric! I took a Sawzall to the exhaust pipe(which was junk anyway) to get it off. I'll dig into it alittle more tomorrow. Just wondering.

Do you mean the exhaust headpipe to manifold bolt heads or stud&nut heads are not SAE or Metric? They should be SAE but they are prone to rusting till they are undersize, that's why your wrench or socket may not seem to fit. Usually a 12mm socket will work on a rusty 1/2" head 5/16 bolt. You may have to use a 6pt instead of a 12pt. |

The exhaust flange is supposed to have 2 studs threaded into it. But I've had a few that previous owner's drilled out and installed a 7/16" bolt... The last one I used that was like that I popped for stainless bolts and nuts so they wouldn't seize if I had to take it apart again. -D.Idiot |

I like to drill mine and use stainless because it can be a real pain getting the nuts off if the head pipe is bent crowding the rear bolt....especially on a 2.25' head pipe...there is not much room and you can not use a socket.... |

This is not my manifold, just an example to show which bolts. I tried 6 & 12 point sockets. I tried metric and SAE standard of various sizes, they don't look to be rounded off,but they are rusty. I'll just saw them off tomorrow and find a replacement.(Stainless Steel?) Thanks

Yes, saw them then off and drill them out. Stainless is great in this application along with the RemFlex gasket part #6006 2.25" head pipe gasket. They are real nice in this application. I used to blow out a FelPro every 6 months or so.....the manifold should have been reground flat. However a horse shoe file got the crusty stuff off and then a good flat file and the RemFlex gasket. |

I never have fasteners rust solid again if I use a little anti-seize grease (usually FelPro) on them. Wish the factory had done that. |

the ones I was trying to remove look like rusted carriage bolts
