While dis-assembling this engine(my 1st slant 6) I removed the coil and bracket which is attached to a BIG chunk of cast iron attached to the engine block. Does that big chunk serve any othe purpose?

That big hunk is the alternator bracket.

On my 74 I threw the extra metal away and mounted the coil on the fender to help keep it cool. My coil did not connect to the alternator bracket.

Funny I realize that now after looking at my 64 GT, but the 270 with aftermarket A/C has the alternator mounted on the drivers side down low?

That's an adapted alternator mount; all '61-up passenger car slant-6s had the alternator on the spark plug side.

Yes this car has had some creative engineering done to it over the years(not by me!),but it's nice to have a parts car to dis-assemble and learn what not to do(and maybe what to do?)

Pictures of this driver's side mount would be interesting.

Santa should be getting me a New digital camera for Christmas(since he busted my old one!) I'll post a pic of the bracket then. It looks alot like a SBC alternator mount, upside-down and attached to one of the waterpump bolts where the AC bracket mounts.
