Hi all,

My apologies if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find anything in a search. I have a 20-year-old Craftsman timing light (it's so old, it's made in USA!). It works well, but only shows basic timing and nothing else. I do not have a tachometer. For tuning purposes, I want to be able to check my mechanical and vacuum advance at various rpm's, so am looking for recommendations for a good advance timing light, maybe with rpm built in. Craftsman has this digital light that has both, made in China, for $90. Just curious what you all are using, and if there are any good, affordable ones available. Any particular advantages to, or reasons to avoid, having both timing light and tach built into one instrument? Thanks for any suggestions.

Roger

I have an >25 yr-old, non-advance Craftsman light I've been using since new, but found I need an light w/ advance. I bought a (made-in-China) one from Harbor Freight #40963 and tested it carefully - it is quite accurate and far brighter than my old light and I'm quite satsified with it. It doesn't have a tach, so I also bought their digital tach/dwell #95670. The latter proved almost useless and was a great disappointment.

My experiance is with Summit and Equs dial backs (digital and manual).

The Summit light lasted a couple of months in fleet and race car use.

The Equs digital was dead in the box.

The analog Equs seems fine....does what it is supposed to. Seems built well enough to follow me around.....

One thing with Sears is you can take it back for replacement or refund if not satisfied. Most of the time with no questions.
That is the only one that I have seen with a tach. Not big on digital.
My old Fox Valley dial back is almost 40 years old.Still works fine, got it from the Snap on man. They don't make them any more.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I went ahead and bought the Craftsman 14066 timing light today. It was $99 on the shelf in the store, but only $79 thru the Sears web site. I also picked up their 82312 digital multimeter for $26. Looking forward to doing some mapping of my timing curve this Monday, in preparation of doing the HEI conversion.
