I am in the process of swapping the gears in an 8 1/4 rear axle. I ordered what I thought were three new crush sleeves for the pinion, just in case I need to disassemble and reassemble several times to get it set up right.

The box of parts arrived today, but I believe I was sold the wrong part. In the bag marked "C/Sleeve" I see three of what look exactly like the C-clip axle retainers and nothing that looks like what I believe is the "crush sleeve." The picture below shows the bag of the new parts with one old axle C clip and twhat I believe to be the old crush sleeve sitting on top of the bag:

Am I wrong? Are those shiny copper parts really crush sleeves and not axle clips? Is the long part in the upper right hand corner not the crush sleeve? Did I get the correct or the wrong parts?

Thanks for the input.

Good, thought so. This may be my first attempt at swapping gears in an 8 1/4 rear axle, but I didn't think I was THAT clueless.

Thanks, Sandy! I start the return and reordering process today.

I've never seen an axle C clip made of copper. Maybe they are plated steel.

Sam- I think you are right. I cleaned off one of the old C clips I pulled from the junkyard rear axle and was steel with some kind of yellowish coating.

The good news is that Randy's Ring and Pinion ( http://www.ringpinion.com ) did the right thing and shipped me the right crush sleeves free of charge. The crush sleeves will arrive tomorrow and I don't even have to send the c-clips back because, according to the parts guy n the phone, "It would cost more to ship them than they are worth." Nice to find a company that still has decent customer service.

Now to get the old pinion out.
