Post subject:  Heat Control Valve missing
Hi folks,
I've just entered this forum, 'cause i bought an '67 Dodge A 100 Van in Ooctober Now I´m checking everything to get the thing running.
So here´s my question:
What´s that heat riser valve good for? I´ve read the article about the installation of the manifolds and how to customize the gasket between the two - but my valve is just gone! The mechanism´s there, but no flap.
To my understanding, the valve brings heat to the intake when the engine is still cold. When warming up, the valve closes and the heat from the exhaust is kept away from the intake, doesn´t it?
So driving without, doesn´t make sense! I´m thinking about closing the thing completly. What do You think?

Hallo, Dingeldeins! Welcome on the board. I was in Darmstadt for a technical conference at TUD this past September, and will be again in September '13…perhaps I can see your van at that time! Image

The manifold heat control valve is there for a very good reason. It should be repaired and kept in proper working condition. Unless you have a race car, it is beneficial to driveability and fuel economy. See here.

Since you are getting the van into shape: Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. It will eventually need a valve adjustment. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.

I think, I'll probably spend some evenings reading and writing around here.

Off topic here, but my wife and I went to Germany on our honeymoon, back in May 1998. We loved it! We landed in Frankfurt, but made our way through Munich, and spent a few days in Garmisch. From our room in Garmisch, we had a beautiful view of the Alps. When we got back to the states, my wife discovered that she was pregnant. Hmm, now how did that happen? :twisted:

Very nice - my wife and I went to Las Vegas in ´96 and got both - married and pregnat!
But back to topic:
If the valve is such important - why has somebody taken it off? Worst of all the shaft, on wich the flap should be installed, is bend. I've tried to pull it out, but it didn't work. There's a little 'nose' right in the middle off the shaft, that keeps the shaft in the bearings.
What can I do? Is there a posipossibilityorder a new one at chrysler?

People remove the heat valve because they do not properly understand its purpose and function.

The shaft cannot be removed without cutting it, and installing the new shaft requires welding. The repair kits are no longer generally available; you have to find new old stock if you want one. It may be easier and less expensive to replace the whole exhaust manifold. New (Chinese-made) ones can be bought for around $120.

more off topic but a couple of years ago i was able to return to the Darmstadt region and visited my ancestors home town. They migrated from Germany to SE Ohio in 1847 and came from a little town near Darmstadt called Kleestadt

are you familiar with that place?
