Post subject:  904 Kickdown Question

The short story : solid throttle linkage ....converted to a 2 barrel.

Before the conversion 1-2 at about 15-20 mph....2-3 around 35-40

Now....1-2 the same but it won't do 2-3 until I am up to 35-40 AND let up on the throttle a bit. I added a tad more length but no change.

Too much initial pressure or too little?

Thanks in advance

It sounds like the lever ratio(s) have changed and you are getting more TP during the 2-3 shift.

Thanks Doug.

I've got room for adjustment on both rods.

I also have intact, the stock linkage pieces.

I'll do some measuring on the stock and modified linkage and see if I can get my head wrapped around how to get the ratios back to stock, if not close.

Thanks again.

BTW, I'm really liking that front manifold with the new 2 barrel.

The 170 loves 70 mph now.

This what you describe probably cannot be adjusted out -- you will probably need a different throttle lever (the one attached to the kickdown shaft at the trans). There are many different levers with different lengths and different indexing of the "D" shaft hole. I don't know the details of your kickdown linkage after your 2bbl conversion (did you do like here?) so can't comment except to guess.

Even if the present lever will work, you needed to shorten and not lengthen the linkage to try for a satisfactory adjustment.

Thanks Dan

Yes, I used Old6's throttle linkage set up as a model for mine.

My accelerator shaft to bellcrank rod did not need a bend to clear the starter as he shows. It's a straight shot.

(I'm thinking it might be because I used the accelerator pedal to accelerator shaft rod off a 63 dart, which is different than my 61's rod, thus changing the orientation.)

Also, I can't say whether or not my bellcrank is located exactly as his is, but I did mount it on a bracket secured by one of the bell housing bolts as it seems he did.

I do have some adjustment in the acc. shaft to bellcrank rod as I do the bellcrank to tranny rod.

I'll reduce the initial pressure and see where that takes me.

Thanks again
