Post subject:  mileage question

I have a 64 Valiant convertible with a new carefully rebuilt engine, new Holley 1bbl carb, Pertronix ignition, just tuned up. I get somewhere between 13 and 16 mpg in city stop and go driving. Is this expected?

My totally stock '64 Valiant convertible with 225 and TorqueFlite, averages about 18 mpg in mixed driving. Very little of it is freeway.

If your engine is not yet broken in, it should pick up some. You should also re-check your valve adjustments and timing since the experts on slants seem to agree they are very important for mileage and power.

New engine has 6000 miles on it. Timing set to 10 degrees BTDC. Valves adjusted hot and running last week. Maybe this is just the way it is. 16 mpg is not too far from 18 mpg. The price to pay for weight I guess.

my '66 Dart convert has gotten as much as 29 mpg! But it has 295K on it and there is no frictional/compression losses to contend with.
However, there are things that can be done to improve mileage. Make sure the brakes are not dragging. Make sure you're not leaking fuel or wasting it. Optimize your axle ratio, tire size, and engine combo. I' ve hit that magic combination on a couple of cars. There's skill and luck involved.

i put a holley 5200 2bbl on my 73 swinger and went from 13 mpg mixed to almost 17. i think holley 1920's just aren't that good on gas. i'd super six it or convert to a weber , holley 5200 or 4bbl it
