Hey everyone... Looks like I've git a nice leak in my rear diff and I'd like to top it up until I can get underneath it and fix the seal. I don't know if I have the 7.25" but I would suspect I probably do. Is there a difference in where the plug is on others? And uh... where is that there plug at? Thanks! |

No plug on any rear axle from the factory (8 1/4,7 1/4) you have to remove the inspection cover. |

I just realized you meant fill plug,not drain plug. Its right on the front of the inspection cover. It a threaded plug on the 7 1/4 and a rubber grommet on the 8 1/4. |

Bad news from my rear end... After finding the star I needed to take the plug out, I found out that the plug is stripped. I'm 90% sure that it's out of gear oil now, so it's essentially dead in the driveway. I'm seeing no real way of getting that plug out conventionally, so I think that since it's not going anywhere until it gets more oil, I may as well take the inspection cover off and try to get the plug out when I have more options to unstick it. Any suggestions? Since this thing seems pretty torn up and I'm having a TON of problems finding a new plug or cover, I think I'm going to try tapping the star into the stripped hole and trying to create some sort of grooves for it to grab onto so I can put it back on once the cover's sealed back into place. I'm assuming that the plug only needs to block the fill hole and not hold pressure or anything, right? As long as I can get it into place and tight enough to keep from falling back out on the road or leak oil, I'm ok for the moment, right? I'm feeling very cranky today over this whole thing, but I have no illusions about my car being an easy fix. I just need the little bastard to roll on it's wheels! |

I don't see why not. Just don't want dirt to get in. If you can, I'd hit up the local parts store. I'd think there would be some product like a reusable wine cork, meant for applications like this. |

I'm on my way out the door to the parts store. My "last ditch effort" idea was to put some jb weld into the stripped hole and sink the star into it to make a new center. I'll definitely exhaust all other possibilities first though... |

Pull the rear cover and when it's off, put a "fill fitting" on the cover. Just measure how far up it needs to be and away from the ring gear (ring gear clearance). Leave the old plug alone it will be easer than trying to remove it. Richard |

Got it out!!! Had to take a small flathead and hammer and demolish the plastic washer underneath, which was obviously very old. Once I did that, I got it to turn with a lot of deep creep and dikes. It took four days, but you could probably hear the celebration from my garage down the block. I still need to get a new washer, but the cover is back on and the plug is never getting torqued down like that again! |
