Click on the Engine FAQ thread and select the timing threads there to study. This is a complicated question that will require some study and thought. The short answer is somewhere between 5 and 10 BTDC; But this will not maximize the performance or economy of your engine Sam |

stock except the obvious carb and intake/exhaust manifolds. Thanks for the replys! The car is running and very responsive. I can really feel the difference of the 2 barrel. Any suggestions on re-torque on the heads after 200 miles? I will look into the timing a little more. |

Did you change the head or head gasket? If so I always recheck head bolt tq at 50-250-500 miles, might sound overkill to some, but I like to be safe. |

There is a great deal of improvement you can make by recurving a stock distributor. It is a time consuming process, but worth it. The good news here is that there are members who have worked out the numbers for you, and the best combo of mechanical, stock, and vacuum advance cans. REad the threads in the engine section. If you do not want to do that, then the best you can do is to get as much low end advance as possible without pre-ignition at light throttle and medium load. That would be climbing a slight hill under light throttle. This means a combination of initial around 10 BTDC and then backing off the adjustable vacuum canister until it no longer pings under light load. For what it is worth, this combination would not pass the early emission tests because it required closing the throttle blade too much. So they set initial timing at close to 0, and opened the throttle some. It made them idle cleaner, but killed low end response. In most states cars like ours are no longer considered common enough to be a concern. Everyone knows they pollute, but consider this a mere drop in the bucket of the total picture. There is a recent thread on re-torquing heads. Do a search. It talks about hot verses cold, and how much. Doc weighed in on that one. He calmed me down after I began to re-torque heads, and the first bolt made a snapping noise. I thought I had broken something. It scared the you-know-what out of me. Doc assured me this always happens as the bolt breaks its seat and begins to move. I finished the job and all is fine. Sam |
