Well, here's another Newbie...
I'm working on a '62 Signet and will post more details as the build solidifies.
I just picked up the infamous 8.25/2.45/11''drum from a mid '70s Valiant. The 11'' brakes will be a nice addition to the front discs. I have all the bits to convert to Sure Grip, and am leaning towards 3.23s. There is quite a price difference in the ring and pinion sets that I have found. Should I buy the cheapest, or do I get what I pay for??

Cheers

Welcome!

11" drums are gross overkill for the rear of an early A-body.

What's your engine build? Is it a 170 or a 225? Tire size? With a mild 225 and short tires you may be happier with 2.94s especially with an automatic. 3.21s are good with a 3-speed though. I was lucky to find a 3.21 geared 8 1/4 for my 3-speed '67 Valiant.

As for gear quality you'll need to speak with someone who has actually installed and run the brands you're considering.

It's a 225 Auto, the tires are taller than stock and are mounted on 15'' wheels. I'm driving on a 7.25/2.76 open.
I'm looking at turbo charging and a mild build. 2500 to 2800 stall converter.
I've done mild slant builds in the past, but turbo is beyond my comfort zone. I taxing a friend for that part of the build.

Currently I am running Super 6, electronic, stage 2 shift kit.

Turbo 225s make enough torque at low enough engine speeds that I'd do 2.71 or 2.94 gears in the 8 1/4. You know what I'd do first though? Try a fairly tight converter and the 2.45s. If the rear tires aren't too tall you might find it works quite well. I think early A-bodies lowered on 225/50R15 tires look good.

Thanks, I've always been on the safe side with my projects and want to have a little more fun with this one. Maybe I'll run it at Woodburn this year? I consider taller gears, turbo will be great for torque.

I prefer Richmond gears. Be careful with "cheap" gears some are known to be a little noisy.I will have some 3.55's for sale after I put in my 4.56's if you are interested,pm me.
