Ok, So just finished installing my rebuilt engine in my 63. Was working great, no problems at all. Then, took it on the highway. Suddenly, whenever I took my foot off the gas, I'd hear a "whooshing" sound. Strange, but I wasn't sure what it could be, because I'd never heard the sound before. It was like a huge SUCKING sound. Then, once I got off the highway, it turned into a clicking or scraping sound. I stopped the car, and it isn't the engine. Once I put it in drive (or reverse), I can hear a crazy scraping sound that just sounds scary to say the least. I left the car by my rented garage to get a ride home. Wondering what this might be? The torque converter bolts were correctly tightened, etc. My starter hex screw won't thread into the bottom starter hole, so I just put one there to hold it for now. The top one is tight. I also may have missed one of the trans to engine bolts. Any ideas? After installing an engine myself over the past 3 days, I'm a little tired. I may have it towed to the shop on Wed. But I'm wondering if there is anything I should do now (while it's parked). |

This is the one that the converter got pulled with the engine? Double check the bolts. Some need locktite to stay put. You torqued the flex plate to crank bolts appropriately? Is the starter correctly tightened? Any trouble installing it? You might have a bad converter too. I've heard that before in a converter eating itself. When it came out of the trans when pulling the engine, something may have been damaged. At this stage, if it isn't something obvious, like loose bolts, you may be pulling the tranny to go through and find a fresh converter. Sorry. CJ |

Yes. The exact one. Had no problems at all pre-highway, but now, ugly. I'll remove the dust cover tomorrow and make sure the Torque converter bolts are tight (they should be) The starter was easy to install, but the lower hex stud wouldn't thread properly! I had what I thought was a good stud, but at the very end it basically stopped tightening. Still, there is a stud in there now (not tight), and it doesn't look out of alignment. I'll see what I can do with some Loctite. |

Easer to pull starter to check for loose torque converter bolts than messing with inspection plate. |

well if it all is not assembled corretcly I would think you would have issues at least in ones mind it's probally part of a rag left inside the trans assembly by a friend to see you squirm yo! |

If the dust cover-tin is slightly warped, the converter bolts will hit. Aftermarket converter bolts with slightly thicker heads will too. There is very little clearence between these parts. |

Thanks for the note, BigSlantFan. I'll keep this in mind. Pretty sure it isn't warped, however. And the torque converter bolts are original. |

"Starter bolt wouldn't install" suggests alignment problems that seem likely to be at the root of your trouble. |

Thanks for stopping by SSD. I appreciate it. I can only agree with you on that one. Just couldn't get the bolt to hold its thread. Taking a day off from this one. I've been head in hood, body under the car since Friday, and I need time to collect my thoughts (and helpful advice, of course). Back at it tomorrow. The question now is whether I drive it back, or have it towed. The latter seems safer, in light of my AAA membership |

No further damage will be done on the back of the tow truck, and better fuel economy to boot! CJ |

So it was the torque converter bolts. Plus, I found the bolt that was missing for the starter and we're threaded and ready to go. Took it for a short spin, and I'm fine again. Swore I tightened those TC bolts, though. Is this something I may want to use LocTite with? I certainly don't want them to come loose again, although this time they're on freaky tight. Also, these are washer-less bolts. I realize that with the clearance issues a washer may not work. Or would it? |

you should use "blue" locltite on the converter bolts. I also use it on the flexplate to crank bolts. |
