My 65 Dart limited slip has a 10/6/64 date stamped into the side of the limited slip differential case. The 65 Dart manual on pg 3-27 figure 15 shows provisions in the pinion shaft housing for inserting axle shaft thrust spacers in holes drilled in each pinion shaft. I got my limited slip apart & it does not have these provisions...ie there are no holes in the pinion shafts or any axle thrust spacers. Were there design variations during the year such that the axle shaft thrust spacers were eliminated?.....or do I have a factory defect that needs fixing? I also found some small pits on one differential side gear tooth & several differential pinion teeth.....are replacements available or is this a not to worry item? |

The 7 1/4 uses a ball bearing type axle bearing that does not need (or have) end play adjustment. DD |

Since the removed axles never left marks on the pinion shaft block (along with the axle having a ball bearing) your response seems correct. The 65 Dart/Coronet shop manual shows this requirement under the sure grip rebuild section which says " The servicing proceedures for the sure grip differential is the same for the Dart and Dodge Model cars." Nowhere does it say rear axle size so maybe the 8 3/4 & 7 1/4 sure grip differential case have similiar configurations & assembly proceedures so they thought they could get away using what are probably 8 3/4 figures & descriptions to cover both?......unfortunately the thrust spacer requirement is a noticeable & misleading difference both in the figures & the text. I'm not looking forward to the process of stretching/spreading the 7 1/4 rear axle housing .020" to drop in the differential case assembly in order to preload the differential carrier bearings....is there a work around? My case dropped out easily which I took to mean the carrier bearings did not have enough preload & consequently the side spacer(s) thickness will need increasing from what was in there before. |
