| Post subject: | Junkyard 225 Swap |
Hey all, So I'm back on the forum after an extended (4 year!) hiatus, and as Uni is winding down, and I've got a few good job offers, I'm ready (both physically and fiscally) to start wrenching on the ol' '62 Valiant again. Basically, the plan is for a full resto-mod; the interior and stereo are already mostly done but there's a paint job in the works and some serious mechanical upgrades going to be happening. So, my plan was to grab a 225 out of the yard to replace the 170 I have, then do a full rebuild with new heads and cam and whatnot (following this build for the most part). So, my question is: what am I looking for in a junkyard 225 for my specific application? Any mating issues with my transmission (TF pushbutton auto)? Any specific year range I should be looking for? The 225's probably taller than my 170, should I be worried about fit in my engine bay or anything like that? What about engine condition; how do I find out if it's good? Will I need a new rad? Anyone done this swap and have some lessons to pass on? Thanks in advance guys, I know it's a lot to answer but your thoughts are much appreciated, Al PS Before anyone asks, I've got the three books everyone's always recommending! PPS More ridiculously long lines of questioning to follow, I'm sure. |

I did that exact swap on a 62 valiant-- luckily I found a low mileage- 1965 donor engine-- swapped in & went driving-- the car is still driven today.(not by me) The additional torque made the swap worthwhile, although i never checked MPG it didn't seem to change much. if going to after approx 1967 you will need an adapter ring for the torque converter snout. Other than that be careful around the heater box the 225 has less clearance, but not really a problem. Lawrence |
