Post subject:  New rebuilt head has open space around pushrods?
I just bought a new to me motor, it's out of a 66 truck and my rig is an 69 A108. The motor is rebuilt and the head is a newer model also rebuilt. I noticed a difference between my old head. And the new one, the pushrods on my old one has little holes in the head that my pushrods pass thru to get down to the lower interface point at engine. The new one is wide open and the pushrods are just sitting there between the rockers and the cam, seems like there would be a guide?
Also what should I set my valve Clearance at cold before the initial startup, all I can find is info on what to set it at when hot. It seems too loose and too tight would be bad either way.
Thanks for the info, I'm cutting out my floor boards right now to weld in new rust free sheet metal. Without the engine and doghouse in the way it's pretty easy to get in there.

There are at least 3 generations of head styles and they are all different around the pushrods. Some are wide open, some have just enough space to pull a lifter out, and others have just a hole for the pushrod.

No guides needed.

Set the valves cold and reset them after the motor runs for awhile and everything gets aquainted with each other. :D

Welcome on the board. There's nothing wrong with your new head. It is probably a pre-1975 item, while the one you replaced was probably a 1975-'80 item. No modification is needed. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Here is the valve adjustment procedure. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.
