Post subject:  Correctly setting my distributor?

I'll admit that with all that I know and can fix on my own, lots of things escape me. This is one of them.

Without even looking at the timing light, you can hear that the distributor can be turned to ALMOST to the point where the engine will really smooth out, but there just isn't enough travel to get there.
I was told that I need to pop the cap off and reset the engine by hand.

I need any advice on this that anyone has. Seems pretty straightforward and I've been reading up on how to go about it, but if I've learned anything from these cars, it's that sometimes things are just a little different.

Thanks!!

Until you are experienced enough to really, truly know what you're doing, timing is best set with a timing light -- not with your ear.

If you are unable to achieve the setting you want, adjust the position of the slotted distributor hold-down plate, relative to the distributor body.
The plate is held to the body with a bolt. If you do not have the special 7/16" distributor wrench made for slant-6 applications, you will have to remove the distributor to access the plate-to-body hold down bolt.

If this is on the '85, it won't have that style of distributor hold down. It will have the clamp which has a 1/2" hold down bolt. This would require the more common 1/2" distributor wrench or a long skinny 3/8" extension with a !/2" socket.
