Post subject:  V8 Radiator Upper Hose

I've upgraded the radiator in my 65 Barracuda with a V8 rad from another 65 Barracuda several years ago. The upper nozzle placement in the V8 rad is different than in a slant six rad. At the time, it seemed that the best solution was to move the nozzle so I could reuse my upper rad hose. The new location isn't perfect and the hose is a bit skewed.

This fall, while flushing out my cooling system, I noticed that I have some scale build-up in the tubes. I ran the cooling system with vinegar to dissolve any scale prior to the flush but it wasn't enough. Since I didn't have any overheating problems with the scaled-up rad, I expect that my cooling system should work at least as well this summer.

I'm thinking that I probably should properly boil-out the rad to maximize cooling. If the rad is out anyway, then I might as well change the upper hose nozzle back to its original position if a suitable hose were available.

Is there an upper rad hose that would fit reasonably well in this application?

Not sure about the earlier radiator Frank. I noticed recently when I asked for an upper radiator hose for my mid-70's dusters if you tell them it has no air conditioning regardless of 19" or 22" you get the hose with the 90 degree bend (fine for the 19" radiator), and if you ask for the hose 'with' air conditioning it is the type that has a slight 'jog'/angle on the part that passes over the top of the fan. (This hose is correct if you have the 22" radiator).

Maybe the 22" rad with Air Con hose can be used for your app?

If your upper rad fitting is offset to the passenger side, try a Gates 20450.

The nozzle on the rad is on the driver's side and appears to be offset from the engine nozzle about 5" horizontally. The obvious question in my mind is: how close is the centerline of the slant six' s thermostat nozzle to that of the 273's centerline?

I contacted Gates and they sent me some information about rad hoses. Having looked through their catalog, I came up with some PNs that might work with some trimming.

First off, the PNs for the 1965 V8 engine are:
  • 20168 - Upper Radiator Hose; W/A.C
  • 25478 - Upper Radiator Hose; W/A.C (Vulco-Flex® Coolant Hose)
  • 20416 - Upper Radiator Hose; W/O A.C (Cut To Fit ✂)
I also found:
  • 20542 - 1962-72 GM Upper Rad Hose
  • 20473 - 1962-92 GM Lower Rad Hose
The catalog don't give dimensions other than hose diameter and length so it's hard to tell from the photos how well they would work. Does anyone work in parts store who could do a quick test fit?

take your list down to parts store...if you drive car down also can just take them out and see which fit

You can simplify matters greatly by installing a straight (180°) water outlet so a hose with (more or less) just a single right-angle bend will suit, instead of having to make multiple twists and turns with the stock slant-6 water outlet.

Use Chrysler p/n 5302 0115 for the water outlet.
