Post subject:  valve cover leaking oil on my '62 /6 hyperpak signet
I have a new neopreme gasket on a chrome-plated valve cover. It leaks on lower side of the valve cover on #6. I have taken the new gasket off and re-set it, torquing the bolts slowly and evenly till they are snug. There are no other leaks. I'm wondering if this valve cover is too thin, and whether someone makes a cast aluminum or some other kind of valve cover to fix this, or whether I need double gaskets, or whatever? Any suggestions?

I never had any problem sealing the factory valve covers...

Clean off all oil from both gasket and cover, then use gold silicon gasket maker on sealing surface of cover. Place gasket on the wet goo and invert on a flat surface over night, this will seal to cover.

The problem is likely the valve cover, if it is one of the cheap Chinese chrome valve covers that are always on eBay. Gasket sealing is not the only problem with those covers.

would an offy stock height valve cover work with the 1.6 roller rockers? There is no baffling on the offy valve cover. I suspect this chrome job is a cheap chinese version and would love to have the offy cover IF it won't hit my valve train. Thanks, guys for your posts!

I found a Specter "heavy gauge" steel, triple chrome plated made to have room for high lift valve train, at Auto Warehouse so I ordered it. I will have to remove the heater core [again, :( ] to remove the old one and install the new one, but I'll use the silicone and seal the rubber gasket to the valve cover for permant installation and TRY AGAIN to install the NEW valve cover. Thanks to all who posted!

Do any of you have such a valve cover as this? If so, what is your opinion of it? Thanks again.

Betchya a six pack it's the same crappy Chinese one you already have.

I have a Spectre on mine and never had a problem. In fact I used their gaskets, breather and PCV that is mounted in a breather housing so they look the same. I used E3000 to bond the neoprene gasket to the valve cover as you can see in the pictures. Click on the red link below my name to view them.
I have had the cover off about 30 times or more in the past 5 years running various lash settings with no leaks....I use Mobile 1 0-30W synthetic oil to boot..... I like the thick chrome washers with the rubber on one side and the chrome bolts to hold it in place. I just snug it down with a 1/4" ratchet, never tight.

Thanks Terry.

I used to get occasional weeping with the cork gaskets but not since I started using the neoprene gasket and gluing it to the valve cover.

I use The Right Stuff by permatex,on a stock cover with a cork gasket,glue it to cover.light grease on side that goes to head,has been off and on over 10 times an my car doesnt leak a drop anywhere.I swear The right Stuff is the best.Mark
