Post subject:  oil pump gaskets

and another observation

had seen posts about the oil pump / gaskets not matching so was watching for that..

the blue gasket in the photo is a Fel Pro gasket,, and that's right, it does not match the pump - casting contour,, and what is the second cavity, across from the suction cavity for??
I had also picked up from some where a black gasket, that does match the pump and block,,I went ahead and modified the blue gasket, so I have one that should work, but I was looking for another black gasket,, checked all the usual suspects: Rockauto, Autozone, Napa, Advance Auto, they all carry the Fel Pro 12768, found that Pep Boys carries a ROL gasket a OP20014, but it looks identical to the Fel Pro part, any ideas on where to find the black one?

thanks
DT

i dont see a reason why the felpro wouldnt work as is. yeah... it doesnt fit the entire face of the block, but it doesnt have to. and my block 65 3plug block, has the "extra" pocket area and it works just fine

the fel pro set up must kind of work,, as it looks to be the oil pump gasket that is widely available,, however the fit of the gasket to the common aftermarket cast pump body is not good.
look again at the photo of the blue gasket (without the patch) on the oil pump body... that pocket being sealed is on the suction side of the oil flow,, the gasket, with compression from tightening the mounting bolts seals with the tiniest of margins,,if there is a leak, the effect will not always be oil leaking out, a leak on the suction side can result in aeration of the oil ahead of the pump,,

i usually coat every gasket with a thin film using loctite grey. that very thin film of silicone will fill in any inperfection weather it be a pit... or whatnot, and will also make the gasket stick, and will not blow or suck in.

(with high hp/rpm with a vw motor, the stock style bail clip for the valve cover needs the valve cover gasket glued on. or it will suck in. RTV fixes that problem at 11 grand on my old engine, i think it will work just fine for an oilpump

I have several different SL6 oil pumps in stock. I compared the different pumps and gaskets to the engine.
The "blue" Fel-pro gaskets are the same as the OEM gasket shape, and will work on a OEM oil pump and a couple of different aftermarket brand pumps. It will not work on some other aftermarker pump castings where the pump's mounting surface is not fully machined.
These pumps have a different style gasket packaged with the pump. So check the gasket on the pump and make sure it matches the machined surface on the pump.
