| Post subject: | Towing a 71 dart |
It's been a long time coming, but it looks like my dad will be able to bring my 71 dart down from Northern VA to Charleston, SC. She hasn't moved since 2006. We were hoping to borrow a vehicle trailer but it's not looking like that will work out. Now we're looking into either renting a u-haul trailer or tow dolly. From what I understand, we would need to remove the driveshaft and plug up the tailshaft. How much of a pain is that, and where could I find/order a plug for the tailshaft? Seems like the Uhaul car trailer could cost me quite a bit... Any other ideas? P.S. He's going to tow it with a mid 2000's dodge 2500, so no problems there. |

Pull the u-joint off the rear end and tape the caps securely, tie the driveshaft up so it is off to the side, and won't move backward and out of the transmission. let the rear end spin. Make absolutely certain that the driveshaft is not going to drop or move backward. Overkill is good. The other option is to grab a wrecking yard yoke, pull the driveshaft while the rear end is high. Insert the spare yoke. Wire it in so it can't come out. Put your driveshaft in the tow rig or inside your car. CJ |

Some states require the car on tow dolly need current plates. Richard |

I'm not positive, but I think most states require either the dolly or the car have valid tags. If the dolley has tags, the car does not require them.

I would put it on a U haul car carrier trailer; it has brakes, proper lights, and good hold-downs making for a much safer tow. I wouldn’t trust something that has been sitting for six years being dragged behind on a dolly on old tires, and because of different state laws regarding car towing methods. Check with the tow vehicle’s insurance company for coverage of towed vehicle, and method of tow they require for out of state transport of an auto. |

WhooHoo another /6 in Charleston area! If you must tow I recommend the carrier. If you end up with a dolly make sure you inspect the tires very carefully. 6 years of sitting + whatever beforehand would concern me. Have you tried getting it to run? In Feb 2010 my '65 dart wasn't running but I took a couple of days to fix it up and drove it from San Antonio, TX to Ravenel, SC. Very uneventful drive; I only had some fluid leaks. Although, it had sat for 2 years and not 6. ~Paul |

she might crank, but needs a battery and the brakes are iffy at best (wheel cylinder blew on a drive from Virginia Beach to No. VA- scariest drive of my life). I'm hoping to get her started within a few weeks of getting her down here. mostly i'd just prefer to store in the garage than have it sit out longer. |
