Post subject:  valve adjustment--engine running?

is it advisable to adjust the valves with the engine running? or is it a big mess like a sbc is , squirting oil all over?
in my 41, the balancer is very hard to get at to mark every 120 degrees. thought i might try it with the engine running. also, if doing the not running way, can't two cylinders be adjusted at a time? 1&6 5&2 3&4 ?

also to pick the brains,,, i have a custom ground cam by howards. they recommend .022 on both intake and exhaust? i couldn't get a straight answer from them except that it is a custom grind, and to set it according to the cam card. usually intake is set considerably less than exhaust, like around .012

Adjusting the valves with the engine running is actually the preferred method of doing it.

You won't have a Chevy-style mess of squirting oil. Adjust while running. Try setting it to the spec they recommend, and give it a listen. If it runs quietly, put it back together and drive. If loud and clacky, tighten the intakes but not so much that the idle goes rough.

Get it good and warm. Like a 10 minute trip up and down the highway. I ran my car around the neighborhood for 10 minutes and adjusted the valves a while back. After a trip down the highway, I'd be running rough when I'd slow down to idle. After getting it good and warm, it runs smooth all the time now. Don't worry about oil. You most likely wont get a drop on anything.

thats good to hear about the oil. i know the rockers oil differently than the chevy. god i use to hate adjusting those things! this will be a piece of cake compared to that. it's not really noisy at all right now, but it only has about 30 miles on it since it came out of the engine shop. so adjustment is in order before the cruising weather gets here.
