Seems that everytime I go over a large bump, or if I somewhat aggresivly accelerate with more than one person in the Dart, the driveshaft grinds away momentarily on the inner tunnel under the car, right where the drivers' and passenger's seatbelts are mounted. Doesn't grind the seat belt mounts, but higher up into the tunnle on the actual floor of the body. Shouldn't there be bump stops to prevent this from happening? if so, where would they be located? |

Sounds like the rear trans mounting has failed or is badly worn. DD |

Visual inspection, pry up on the transmission tail shaft or support the tail shaft and remove the mount and crossmember. |

If the tranny mount is oil soaked... that a good sign that it needs replacing. DD |

Yup, here's another vote for taking a careful look at not just your trans mount but also your left and right engine mounts. The left and right rubber blocks should be square like bricks. If they are bulged, sagged, and/or cracked, replace them. Also, open the hood, apply the handbrake, put your foot firmly on the brake pedal, start the car, put it in Drive, and nudge the gas pedal briskly. If the engine jumps more than a few inches, the mounts are shot. Get the left and right ones here, and the rear one here (last item on the page); these are premium items you will never again have to replace. |

Fair enough, I'll try to find a way to check that trans mount. I checked both left and right engine mount recently (SlantSixDan recommended doing so when i was experiencing a ditributor clearance issue) Both appear to be sqaure and strong. a niave question... if the transmount was infact worn, wouldn't the trans hang "lower" than it needs to be? (ie. clearing the drive shaft tunnel even more?) |

Because of the way the trans mount is designed, there's a limited degree of droop/sag even if the mount is completely shot. But if it is completely shot, there'll be a fair amount of upward movement possible. |

Are there lowering blocks on the car? Rear springs shot? Frame rusty and bending? |
