| Post subject: | Gas Gauge Failed? |
HI. I put a bunch of gas in my '68Dart today, and the gauge went to about 3 qts full. Drove around for 20 min, then turned the car off. Upon restart, the gas gauge is pegged on empty. I crawled up underneath and unplugged and cleaned off the lead from the sending unit, and still have no gas gauge. The tank and sending unit were replaced with new stuff about 3 yrs ago. The gauge has always worked great, and I get very good gas mileage luckily> usually about 24-25 mpg. I'd rather be towed out of ditch or have a flat tire, than have no gas gauge. thx, Jef |

You probably have a bad ground at the sending unit. Clean the connections of the metal strap bridging the rubber coupling between sending unit, and steal fuel line. This is the ground path for the fuel gage. You may need to make a jumper up to bypass the metal strap. |

when I was under the gas tank yesterday, I forgot about the metal strap. It wasnt on there. I'll stop at a boneyard on my trip today, and find one. Hopefully that will be it. It's just weird to think that it finally fell off yesterday in a parking lot somewhere in Phx metro. |

If you dont find one, in a pinch you can just use a hose clamp on the sending unit, a piece of wire and a screw...strip both ends of wire and terminate, one end you screw to the car frame ("o" terminal good here),the other end you hose clamp to the spot where the old ground strap was (clean the sending unit fuel line off for good contact)... Not the prettiest fix, but it will work until you find a proper ground strap. -D.Idiot |

I was going on a lengthy trip the other day, when I started this post. Went to the boneyard, grabbed one of those little strap things from the sending unit because my car didnt have one. My car is set up with over a foot of rubber fuel line coming of the sending unit, so that little strap wouldnt work anyway. About an hour into the long trip the gauge popped back ON, and stayed on for several restarts the next day. It was ON again today, and I havent done anything. Thx for the advice about the fixes listed above, I'll take care of it. |
