Well I keep reading and reading and then my head hurts from all the great information available here. I am going the route of replacing my 9"drums in the front with disc brakes from a 73, new ball joints etc, but I seem to be having a problem with the best way to get 10" Drums on the rear end. Can someone suggest the best option for the BBP wheels for the rear end? Do I look for a 8 1/4" or 8 3/4" or find a 7 1/4" with BBP? I do plan to work the engine some but mild to moderate nothing that radical, just more that stock. Can you give me some ideas on rear ends and what to expect? Thanks for the patience for we new folks here, it is greatly appreciated. John |

You could use the rear from the disc brake donor car. |

Would love to but only the disc brake setup is available, ;-(. Still looking however, there are several available on Seattle CL but so far they are 7 1/4" SBP. Search continues. Thanks! John |

I have another question, I have no idea what to expect on the cost of an 8 3/4" rear end. Can someone give me an idea please? I see 7 1/4" for $35-$85 and have found a 8 3/4" for $250. At this point from what I have read the 8 3/4" is overkill for my application, mild performance but I am still a novice here but trying to catch up. Cheers. |

There is no large bolt pattern 8 3/4 rear the will fit without modifications. The "A" body 8 3/4 is small bolt pattern. If you can find a LPB 7 1/4 in good shape, don't pass on it, if you have a street car. I run a 3.91 SG 7 1/4 in my low 13 sec drag car. Though this is an exceptional case. If you do a search on the site, there are some 8 inch Ford rears that are very close to a "bolt in". Actually easier then using a non "A" body 8 3/4. |

I put aftermarket BBP axles in a 8-3/4 housing. Total cost was around $450. The price you were quoted for an A-body 8-3/4 is cheap for this part of the country. But, don't forget you will need a driveshaft change if you change rear ends. That was also expensive here. |

What about a 65-66 B body 8 3/4? I was told they can be bolted in without changing perches in a 72 A body. |

That rear can be installed by "spreading" the springs. Not really a good idea, as it puts a abnormal side load on the spring bushings and shackles. Also since the rear is wider, you need to find the correct offset wheels, so the tires do not rub the fender.

Hit up you local craigslist for prices... Typically down here in Oregon you are looking at $400-800 for an 8 3/4" depending on ratio/sure grip/modified with axles... 7 1/4" is as cheap as $50 at the local you pull it...most likely it will need some maintenance and is a 2.76 peg leg... 8 1/4" is a mid-range item at $200-500...I picked up the rear under the Hpak duster for $375...8 1/4" out of a '73 340 duster, owner put in a new sure grip unit and new 4.56's...the sure grip was worth about $350 new...he was changing to a Dana 60 and needed some $$ to recoup the costs... Car-parts.com a year back had an 8 1/4" out of a dart from a yard in Port Orchard for $300 at one time, I think they even listed it as a 3.21 from a 3 speed car. So FYI, surfing and bargain hunting can be your buddy. -D.Idiot |
