Post subject: | Slant 6 10" Performance Clutch Install 3-16-12 |
Hello folks, I know there are many threads on here devoted to performance clutch packages; - But some of the parts are hard to get and some of these parts have come back with mixed reviews for one reason or another.. Also I am not sure Part #'s for the other clutch threads are clearly provided. With some posts I have read you have to call the clutch company and then talk to a tech guy at the - then they make the parts for you.. And also which stage to get seems to be a concern as well. Hopefully I can help with a few concerns: Which Clutch / Pressure plate diameter to choose? - Stock type borg&beck Pressure plates exploding at High RPM's and not providing hardly any holding power behind a modified slant or possibly a heavier car / truck.. I am Documenting My current clutch install into My daily driver 79 Volare(duster) to help inform folks about what is available and what will swap. I have never attempted to contact Spec or any other clutch company - I am just using some McLeod Parts That I have used in my '69 Dart For over 10,000 Miles and with well over 250 Dragstrip Launches on a ~300 HP engine in a 3400# Car. These Parts work - I have tortured and tested them that's why I was so happy to find them available (even though I thought they were discontinued)! At the time of this writing I found these parts seem to be available through summit/ Jegs as a 1-2 Week order - And they came in! (maybe they are tucked away in a warehouse somewhere??) Even though McLeod does not officially list these parts ontheir website Here is all the shimmy on the Part #'s you'll need to do this setup: -McLeod # 260826 10" 1x23 Dual Friction Ford Clutch Disc -McLeod # 360116 Ford / Mazda 10 Press. Plate -Stock Throwout bearing. -You will need a flywheel with a ford 10" pressure Plate mounting holes drilled on it.. Most likely your stock flywheel is not a good one to use for this.. Get the McLeod one Part # 464001 (it Fits stock slant pressure plates and the 10" ford one as well) It is SFI approved too Pics of what We are dealing with here: New Pressure Plate and dual friction disc (10") This is a diaphragm Pressure plate - not a 3 finger one like a stocker - It will require a 3/8 to 1/2" spacer to be fabricated to move the clutch lever / TO bearing closer to the fingers - More on that later. When I did this install of this package on the dart back in 2006, I had some interference issues with the clutch disc hanging up on the Press. plate on the inner sides of the mounting tabs - i will address this mod later in the thread when I do the install. Here are the tabs: Notice how close the mounting tab protrudes into the Pressure ring space: I like the quality / design of the disc: Some people have noted issues with the Ford 1X23" Splines somehow being different than the chrysler ones - i have NEVER had any issues here; Shots of me test fitting The disc on both a spare 833 and an old 3 speed input shaft that I will use as an alignment tool: Shots of the PP on the Flywheel that is drilled for a ford Press. Plate Pattern: More to follow! Greg |

Thanks, Greg! I will probably get one of those plates and a similar 10" disc for the T5 10 spline. I *believe* that the Wilcap alum flywheels we had made up a few years ago have this same Ford/Mazda PP pattern on em? Best, Lou |

The 23 spine Ford disc will fit on the Chryco input shaft The 23 spline Chryco disc will not fit on the Ford input shaft. Is your clutch the Taurus SHO clutch? |

Great write up Greg, much appreciated. One question to ask, what bolts are you using. Since I've snapped a couple of stock bolts installing pressure plates, I don't trust the ones coming out of the car anymore. I was going to use grade 8 bolts, but found that the Ford 5/16" x 7/8" ARP bolts seem to work fine (and I call $20 cheap insurance). What does the Ford/Mazda use? Thanks! -D.Idiot |

Greg, I know you are one the way to Maosn Dixon (Me too in about 30 min) But just to be clear is the McLeod flywheel already drilled for both patterns? Or do you have to request the Ford pattern in addition to the Stock Slant pattern. Rick |

I am glad someone smarter than me has found out how to do this. What bell are you using? |

The McLeod Slant Flyweel Part # 464001 is Drilled for both the ford 10" and the Mopar (borg and Beck) 9" or 10" Pressure Plate!Rick The only kinda goofy thing that I and others have found is that this flywheel will come in with the 60-67 Small register hub in the center - Just measure your old stock flywheel with a Micrometer (or use Doc Dutra's Diagram Below..) and take the McLeod Piece to a local competent machinist and have them enlarge the center register bore to the 68- up Larger size - Should cost You a case of beer or a $20 Bill. As far as some other qustions - Yes I would use ARP 5/16 pressure plate bolts - I have broken off a few stock type bolts attempting to torque them correctly - and drilling and helicoiling is not fun I think the ARP ones are correct for this type project and better than hardware store grade 8's - Pressure plate bolts that I have seen have raised shoulders to positively locate the PP onto the Flywheel. Yes as far as I know this mod will work with stock bell's - I have not yet tried it with an early three speed bell .. But I do know it works with the 833 and AL 833 OD bells with possibly minor clearance grinding - I had to do no Grinding at all on the bell to do this PP install on the Dart 6 years ago with a Cast Iron 64-64 833 Slant Bell Greg |

Can a Mopar mini starter be used on this flywheel? |

I see No reason why not - I have never used one on this particular flywheel - The Ring gear is the same as anything else and I have used the mini starter on different 904 / converters and Stock flywheels with no issues.Greg |

Greg, thanks again for the info and pics. How much do the parts run (without the case of beer for machine work)? Gonna break the news to my son. Good thing summer is comin' - he will have to put in a few more hours at work! |

Summit says $193 for PP and $333 for flywheel. I looked at my Wilcap flywheel and it looks to have that pattern on it. I will order one of those PP's sometime soon, and a T5 10 spline 10" disc... Thanks again, Greg. Lou |

Yep Good Stuff.. Only thing about the wilcap flysheels We ordered - The Steel insert is only 9 " Is this an issue with the 10" disc??I looked at my Wilcap flywheel and it looks to have that pattern on it. I will order one of those PP's sometime soon, and a T5 10 spline 10" disc... Thanks again, Greg. Lou 1/2" of the Disck will be hangin off the actual contact surface - I suppose We could contact Wilcap and Get a 10" insert put in there? Thoughts for those who Got the Wilcap Lite AL flywheels? (like Lou & I) Greg |
