So I got the engine from my old Valiant into the new Valiant with fresh gaskets, new rear main seal, new filter, hooked up the HEI, primed the two barrel carb and with a couple squirts of the accelerator she lit right off!

Only problem.... I forget to put the oil in.

It only ran for about 30 seconds or so before I realized I'd failed to add the oil and shut her down. I added oil and fired her up back up and she seemed fine, but I haven't been able to really tell if I messed the bearings or something up. I'm hoping for the best.... :(

I just can't believe I did that. I've never done anything like that before. I'm either getting old or working too quickly. Maybe it's just the full moon... :?

Anyone else do this before? I feel like a total dumbass....

You should be absolutely fine, you caught it early enough, and everyone knows you can't kill a slant six   I've had friends make a trip to the coast and back in their trucks, just to have no oil on the dipstick when they come back and all they get is a light knock. That guy is still running that motor with no problem except for blowing blue smoke when he lets off the gas, but that was a hour at least at highway speed with minimal oil at best.

Just check for any weird noises or smoking.

Seth

I bet you're OK, we started the LeMons car for a bit w/o oil pressure, and then ran it hard for 15 hrs on a track! No problems...

I'd be willing to bet that folks fall into two categories...

1. Those that admit to doing something similar.

2. Those that have and won't admit it!

I worked at Sears Auto Center when I was in college doing your basic schtuff...

One day a little Isuzu something or other comes in for an oil change. It was a busy day and I was moving pretty quickly...

The tranny pan looked just like the oil pan...

Yeah, I drained the tranny fluid and put an additional 4 quarts of oil in it!

Didn't even realize that something was amiss until I started to back it out and it didn't seem to want to go and then started to smoke a little...

As soon as I put it back up on the lift and noticed that it had TWO pans I knew what I had done.

Luckily, no damage done. I sprang for a full tranny service, new air filter, etc,...

I learned a valuable lesson that day and have never been so quick with a job since then. Now it takes me a full day to do an oil change...

If it's not making any odd noises by the end of today, then I am 99.9% sure you will be just fine, hell, my '74 leaked a little oil and I forgot to check it one day, I had been driving around all day on just enough oil to touch the tip of the dipstick. That engine ran perfect with no odd noises until the day I crashed... I am pulling that engine apart soon, I wonder what it will look like inside.

That's nothin...

Drove my '74 Swinger from Salem to Grants Pass without oil on the dipstick (found out later), plus it overheated (Blew freeze plug). I put a quart of oil in at the Redding track after having gotten towed by Andrew(Kidd) and Jessica... still wasn't any oil on the dipstick... raced all weekend, won some $$ and then put oil in it.

Never had a single problem with bearings.... reason? Oil pressure light didn't work...

The engine in my current '65 Dart has killed 2 oil pump drive gears. The 1st pump would lose pressure any time I gave it a little spirit while accelerating (read: drag racing) while full of oil, just crappy pump.

That pump finally died on me at wal-mart one evening.

Second pump went while I was cruising down Interstate 5 on the way home... that sucked...

Third pump with new cam from Dusteridiot works flawlessly, and the engine has never been happier.

Slant sixes are really tough little suckers. There is a reason why people say "I just couldn't kill the damned thing."

I managed to kill a /6, but not due to lack of oil.

When I purchased Old man Sherman, the owner didn't take care of him and I blew the 1st piston's connecting rod and ram the piston into the head and shredded the cylinder skirt( from the rattling connecting rod). The timing chain was all lose oil caked in places, all around unappreiated vehcile.

Mind you it was his summer/ weekend driver and I bought it in march and was going about 120-130kms(70-80mi) getting my brother to the airport for a red eye flight after leave . I almost cried as the engine made it's death moan then died.

I only had the car 5 days. So here my brother(mechanic) and I (not so much mechanic) with cell phone for light as the sun was not up yet looking to see what the problem was. Seeing me almost in tears looking down at my now dead beauty, my brother says " Well, it is good to say that it wasn't amateur porn night. Check the oil and try cranking it over again." I did so nothing. Called up the parents for help brother still makes it on time for his flight.

Later I pull the engine and found the mess that had happened :( .

So in short the/6 can die but you really need to murder them.
