wondering if mopar's effort on the mpg quest..
did the engines have any special parts/mods
or was the basic lower weight/OD trans all the effort made?

Engine peculiarities to the FD/DL were aluminum intake manifold, small-venturi carburetor jetted extra lean with vacuum-operated idle speed modulator, specific distributor with long-throw vacuum advance can. Probably application-specific EGR valve, too, but my '76 parts manual is now DusterIdiot's, so you'll hafta ask him!
