im about to install the oil pan, and torque spec seems to be 200in lbs, or 17ft lbs.

last time i did an oil pan, i used sealer on both the block side, and pan side. and while torquing down to spec, the gasket was buldging before i even reached it.

reading the oil pan install article, it doesnt say anything about sealer on the pan side. it only states to lay a bead on the block, and lay the gaskets over it. then install pan

i just want to make sure, you guys that done this many times, never use sealer on the pan side? does this avoid early buldging? and you have absoultely no leaks correct?

thanks guys

What is the pan gasket made out of....cork? That is typical of that style and I will not use them on any engines I build. I prefer the harder composition style pan gaskets made by Detriot and others because they give you a firmer feel when you tighten the bolts and don't bulge out, plus they seal better. I use 3Mâ„¢ Weatherstrip adhesive to stick the gasket to the block and let sit for a few minutes and then use a clear silicone to apply to the surface that will seal the pan to the gasket. I have never used the end seals, just fill the gap front and back with clear silicone as well.

I would go to your local parts store and see if they offer any non-cork brand oil pan gaskets. I think you will be more satisfied.

Sealer tends to act as a lubricant- until it cures. So I do a multistep tightening sequence. I use permatex Spray-High-Tack adhesive/ sealer between the block & gasket, then silicone RTV sealer on the pan side (I do use the rubber end seals myself). I tighten all bolts to 5 ft/lbs & let it sit for about an hour. I remove each bolt- one at a time- treat it with loctite blue & torque it to 15 ft/lbs- maybe 12-13 at the corners where it wants to crush the gasket more.

If I could find a non-cork pan gasket set, I'd use it. Last time I did this job, none of the parts places listed anything but cork.
