Post subject:  Inner Axle Seal Install

Finally got the inner axle seals out of the 8 3/4" rear I'm working on for the Swinger. PB Blaster, a cold chisel, and some pounding with a BFH for a few minutes each. Had to mangle them pretty badly. Those things were in there TIGHT.

So, installing the seals is my only remaining hurdle (other than learning to set the axle end-play). Any tips of tricks to installing the seals? Should I use any RTV around the outside of the seals? Is there a special tool I need to buy/rent?

It's been awhile, but I think I used a KD seal puller to pry the old seal out w/o any trouble, and an expensive J.C.Whitney seal driver kit to push the new one in. I don't think I used any sealer, as there was something already on the outside of the seal. Both tools were inexpensive.

Yeah, there's something that looks like red locktite around the outside of the seal...

Make sure the housing is clean and smooth (sand it) to accept the new seal. I always chamfer the new seal with a flat file, and put a little RTV behind the seal where it seats. Make sure lip where you start the seal has no burrs or it will not go in. I use a seal driver or a piece of 2" (2.25"??) exh pipe to pound it in, gently.

Also a big ball joint or axle nut socket on a long 1/2" drive extension will work for driving them in as well.

Exactly the kind of tip I'm looking for.

Thanks, Greg!

Make sure to not "dish" the seal as you install it...
Only apply force to the outer circumference (edge) while you install it.
Distorting the flat face may lead to poor sealing.
