Post subject:  Starter rebuild

So I finally get the new motor in and together, clean up all the wiring and install the Holley univ. throttle bracket, fill with water and oil, install the batt and go to turn it over..Nothing. What Now!!?? Check the neutral switch, ahh that's what I forgot. Plug it in...Nothing. Lights come on but nothing more than a very light clunk. So I replaced the batt since its been sitting a while. Same. All the gauges come on,fan works, headlights, turn signal still beeps the horn all is normal as before. try shorting the relay and get nothing but a spark. So I remove the starter and as I'm turning it around a gob of rust colored water? comes out of a few holes. Nice and thick looking staining orange. So before I try to take it apart and clean it is it a goner? I tried to find a replacement but the part number doesn't come up for me on parts sites. Its a nippondenso 22640. I forgot where I bought it but its a small gear reduction(?) starter I needed to clear the headers. Is there a rebuild kit and am I missing anything else? I also tried leaving the batt lead on and touching the two ends together and also got nothing not even a spark. Ive checked the engine movement along the way as Ive installed things and its been moving freeley so nothings binding. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Dizzy

The nippondenso starters are very rebuildable.

Take it apart and see what the problem is.

You may just need to clean and relube the ball bearings.

You can clean/replace the contacts too. (put the round solenoid contact in drill press and use file)

Ed thanks. That looks like a lot of reading after a very long work day. I'm going to dig into it hopefully tomorrow or Thur. Sound like I'm better off. Where are you located? I'm a transplant in Washington from L.A. originally. I was born right across from Dodger stadium.
