My 66 Belvedere has been giving me a bit of headache lately. I had problems last year with getting the battery charging system to work, I tried a new mechanical regulator and then switched to an electronic one but the problem persisted. I just installed a brand new one wire alternator from tuff stuff and the battery is still not charging. The battery is a new interstate 12V and I checked the connections and everything seems ok. Any ideas?

"One wire alternator" could mean a few different things. Could you please describe exactly what kind of alternator you just put in?

It pretty much has to be a wiring or ignition switch problem at this point…

Are you saying that you bought the newer electronic regulator that's the little black box or the newer style flat one that's about the size of a wallet??? If your using the little black box, I say toss it for the newer one. I had problems with my A100's charging system and a butchered wiring for the charging system. I grabbed a alternator, regulator and as much wiring as I could of a 74 Mopar and followed this page!! http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Elec ... arging.htm If your using the newer style you have to do some wiring to make it all work right. I have had nothing but problems with the box on all my Mopars, since switching to the new style, I have never looked back. They are so much more reliable and accurate than a anitquated box. Good Luck

The Alternator is from Tuff Stuff part number 7509RESP. It is a chrysler 100 amp alternator with an external mounted regulator. Bought it from Summit Racing.

Okeh…and what kind of wire or cable did you run from the alternator's B+ (output) terminal to the battery positive, and via what route?

I hooked the alternator up to the existing cable which runs to the ammeter and ignition switch

That was not a good idea at all. You've got an alternator capable of producing a lot more current than the stock unit, for which the wiring was only just barely adequate. You are begging for expensive and extensive damage to the car, if it has not already happened. The whole idea of a 1-wire alternator is that you run one wire from the alternator directly to the battery. A very thick wire, an 8-gauge wire (more accurately "cable").

Ok I'll get some 8 gauge and hook it up. Thanks for the advice Dan.
