Post subject: | Mystery? |
I had a rubber valve cover gasket with regular gasket maker and wound up with leaks by two bolts after a while (not straightaway). I changed the gasket to cork and used hylomar, moved the same two bolts to different positions right next to each other and they are still the same two that are leaking oil. They are not the stock bolts that came with the engine and they just happen to be the only two bolts that leak. They fit and all, so I don't know what is happening. Anyone have any experience with this sort of phenomenon that could shed a little light on the mystery. Nearest I can see off the bat is that the stock bolts have washers that are attached, whereas these can be taken off, but that, to my mind, really should not matter...right...??? |

Well if the bolts are slightly longer/ or to long, and you are just snugging them that could be the problem.( bolts bottoming out before any real clamping force happens) Try to stack more than 1 washer on each bolt and try to tighten again, paying very close attention to see if you are actually applying a clamping force. Other wise it makes no sense why that is happening... |

Remove the valve cover again and fix its warped gasket rail. No gasket "sealant" or "maker" or other gunk is required or wise in this application. |

Thanks. I thought about that bottoming out/extra washer idea. If that does not work, I will have to remove once again... |
