Post subject:  Chrysler engine markings

going around the 83 slant six motor,, one more time while awaiting the return of the body/chasse

Looking at the rod big ends,
with the case upside down, on the oil pump side of the rod big end...stamped on a machined in flat...

#1 cap and rod stamped with a swastica
#2 cap and rod no stamp ( either side ?)
#3 cap and rod arrow head ( that is what it looks like to me)
#4 cap and rod arrow head
#5 cap and rod arrow head
#6 cap and rod arrow head

I had seen where a swastica was used on the serial number pad to indicate an OS bore or US crank,,,, so what can it mean on a rod big end?

any ideas?
wonder how they can up with that defect indicator?

regards
DT

Never seen a swastika used, but I have seen Maltese crosses. Maltese cross was usually for undersize journal.

and it is a maltese,,not a swastica

but for a rod big end,, wouldn't you just cut the halfs,,
and why a maltese for a mark?

The marks I've seen were usually on the block, and signified an undersize crank journal. I would think that rod would have had an oversize bearing in it, the rod would not be cut. :D

the rod sizes all checked good,, I had Ed put new ARP bolts in them, crank pins and journals were good to,, maybe it was something they fixed at the factory,, I did not check center to center length..

I have also seen these "strange" symbols on the late SL6 con rods...
Usually all the rods have a different pair of symbols so you just match them to keep the right cap with the matching rod.

With the "arrow head"... are "pairs" pointing in different directions on each of the 5 rod / caps using that mark, to help you keep caps & rods together? (left, right, up, down?)

Seems like the factory lost their numbered punch set so the just used what ever else they had to mark the rod / cap.
