Post subject:  what is a good valve spring pressure target?
spoke with Ed down in Mooresville and he said he will finish the cyl head for the 83 D-150 this week and I can pick it up Friday :D

however Ed was questioning the valve springs that I had left with him.
They are Sealed Power VS510, these list as 80 lbs @ 1.6875,,
For comparison, I found on allpar.com that the 1968 stock slant had 62 lbs @ 1.65 I never checked the springs I took out of the 83..

The cam I am using is an Oregon hydraulic regrind, 1333 intake on the intake and 1527 intake on the exhaust.
advertised 256/250 .447 and .432 at the valve.
This is intended to be a low rpm torque motor..

I called Oregon and they said they would like to see 95 closed minimum.
He mentioned bounce when the exhaust valve closes..

Ed is going to put a .060 shim under and see where they are and give me a call.

What valve spring pressures do folks run?

I am running 305 DHS Isky springs on my head and at 1.625 they are at 130lbs, At full open 220lbs. No problems With over 200 passes at the drag strip and regular driving.

i run stock 340 red valve springs with 278 purple cam ....dont know pressures....no problem

With a low RPM hydraulic motor I would worry way more about installed height being equal than seat pressure. :?

I don't believe I have much over 135# on my junk, and I turn it over 6500. :roll:

Ed came up with a set of valve retainers that compressed the vs510 valve springs enough to get to to 95 lbs with the valve closed. He checked the set up and with a max valve lift of .447 springs do not go solid, but they are at the limit for coil clearance.

and I did check valve tip installed height
they are all with in .015,, is that good?

Probably overkill on the spring pressure for such a small cam, but OK. 0.015" tolerance on inst ht sounds fine to me, unless you're going to turn serious RPMs.

I really don't think 80 lbs on the seat is too little. The engine speed is relatively low and weight of the valve train is pretty moderate. Ever think you'll see 5000 RPM with this?

I never plan to turn above 4K,,, and that is what I told the guy at Oregon Cams when I called,, he recommended with the grind on that cam a minimum of 95 closed,, he said with less he would be concerned with bounce when the exhaust valves close...

I am guessing he's never seen the valves in a Slant. With an exhaust valve the size of a nickel bounce isn't a big priority. :shock:

that is possible, I did not send any photos of the valves, another possibility is, as said before:

the head is already assembled,, so I'm not inclined to change it back, but I will double check the coil clearance before buttoning it up.
