Post subject:  833 rebuild Q's with pictures
The 833od in my '76 Dart started getting noisy in 4th, so pulled it out for a rebuild. I finally got it all apart, and wanted to get insight on what I found inside, from those more experienced than I...

Here is the pinion bearing (this was on the back side, hidden next to the gears on the maid drive pinion):

I can't find my spare shaft to compare this too, is the rear edge of the teeth supposed to round off? It's perfectly smooth and consistent the whole way around.

The 1st-2nd clutch sleeve gear. (Never had issue with this?)

Clutch gear and inside of 1st speed gear had odd wear as well:

Not sure what to make of all of this, or if I should even be concerned? I'd imagine the 1st-2nd clutch sleeve gear should at least be replaced, but I'm tempted to just run it again, as I'm short on time and money.

Thoughts and advice greatly appreciated!

The input shaft bearing roller cage looks odd to me. The rest of the clutches and such look to have normal wear. If you were not having any shifting issues then I would not worry about the clutch parts. What was the high gear noise you were getting?

Yeah, the carnage on the input shaft bearing is odd for sure. Not sure what happened to it as it was on the side up against the gears, and there was no debris in the bottom of the trans. case, either. Here is a close up of it:

As for the high gear noise, how to describe it... It was a deep groan, metallic sounding. My mind went directly to worn bearing when I heard it. I noticed it while on the freeway, on a trip to Oregon. Down-shifting into 3rd seemed to make it go away, but as soon as I let out the clutch in OD the noise was back. I never heard it in any other gear. The fluid level was low when the noise showed up, but topping off the gear oil didn't make the noise disappear. Hope that helps?

3rd in the OD trans is direct so it takes load off the bearings. I would be highly critical of all the bearings you plan to reuse. Any noise or roughness in the bearings is cause for replacement.

No worries, as I have all new bearings and synchros for it. It doesn't appear to need the synchros, but I ordered them, so I might as well use them. I'll save the ones I pull out, as the OD box in my pickup sounds like it could use them...

If everything else looks good to go, I will plan to reassemble after church tomorrow. Yay. Thanks again for your guidance, Josh.

I had an OD go bad too. Mine had leaking seals at the shift arms/shafts so I think it got dry and heated up. A groan? Mine sounded like a large transformer or industrial electrical box- a loud deep humming. I never did fix that box- I got a fresh one from Jamie Passon.

I'd be interested to see what you find out in there. I seem to remember. Eing told to look for a worn bushing, not bearing? Like I said, I never did one!

Finally got it all reassembled and in the car today. Funny thing was, the most difficult part was reinstalling it in the car... It fought me more than any trans install I'd done before. Anyway, it works like a charm, and no unusual noises!

Jamie Passon is nothing short of briliant. However, his website has been "almost finished" for quite some time, and is missing lots of products / information. I ordered a rebuild kit plus various other things, from Brewer's Performance, and was very happy with their level of service. I was a little miffed that the "Countershaft Tool" they sell is merely a chunk of pipe...Had I known that I could have found some pipe locally, cut it to length, and saved some money. Oh well.

Jammie Passion is a member here So maybe PM him for questions and or parts. Jammie is a work-o-holic with 2 jobs and works in the wee hours on the weekends and nights doing tranny stuff. That leaves very little time at the computer. I do know one thing he will go out of his way to help anybody.

He also is building Abody length bolt in 5 speeds. Bad thing is they are splined for Hemi pucks.
