Hey y'all, I've got a 84 Dodge 1/2 ton with a slant, that has a cam shaft going flat. Everything else is stock, so does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement cam? My pride and joy has the A833 od trans, and I'm looking for something that will allow me to run the speed limit on I-20(. 80mph) without too much sweat. Any takers??? BTW this is a great forum!!!!!

Trying to maintain 80mph in a brick with a 1 barrel isn't going to be easy.

Do you have some more details on your rig? Rear end ratio for example?

Hey Thor, I tried to figure out my rear end ratio, and I know this is ridiculous, but I turned my driveshaft 2 turns for every single turn of my rear tires. This can't be right!!, does the tranny need to be in gear or not? First time this has ever happened. What am I doing wrong. Also Id tag is gone from differential.

If it is an open rear you have to hold one wheel from turning when you turn the driveshaft or it will not come out right.

A correctly tuned 1bbl slant 6 in a truck will easily maintain 80mph (unloaded) without any problems with the 833OD IF you have a decent rear end ratio. Depending on the tire size, you would need at least 3.55s. If you have any size of tire at all, you need to run 3.92s or 4.10s.

I have an 84 that has 3.55s w/a 30" tire and I don't even shift into OD until 65mph or so. I will soon go with a 3.92 because I plan to stay with smallish tires like 30s or 235/75-15s. Any larger diameter tire I'd need the 4.10s to have reasonable cruise rpm. Of course, the opposite is true.....if you are running really small diameter tires 3.55s might be ok. (I test drove an 87 that was set up with 3.55s and small tire, and it was fine.)

Slantzilla, I tried with one wheel up and then both wheels in the air, same thing. I guess I'll have to pull the diff cover . I'm also looking to purchase chrome slotted wheels like the 79 Little Red Express truck. Then I'll try for a set of 3" black side pipes. Then come next February my oldest son can drive it to school.
