Post subject: | Vacuum line question |
I've been working on my turbo build and just started the motor up and was wondering if I can use a port in the intake Manifold for my vavle cover vacuum line I believe it's for the crank case The problem I'm seeing is some smoke coming out of my breather in the vavle cover I've plugged all the vacuum line from the carb because of the blow thru setup and I'm hoping to fix this minor problem with a easy solution but I'm worried that the vacuum line will see boost pressure and start blowing oil Any and all help is always appreciated |

I don't understand why you'd need any sort of a vacuum line going from anywhere in the intake system, on a boosted car, to the rocker cover. What would be its function? What am I missing? I just put a breather on each end of the rocker arm cover and blocked all the carburetor's vacuum fittings. Blow by/cylinder leakage (crankcase pressure) will escape from those breathers, is my hope. At some point in the future, when I win the lottery, I may install an oil pan vacuum pump.... when I win the lottery.... |

Bill I'm not sure this is why I'm asking when I had the motor running last fall I noticed it but when I seen it today I thought it may need to be addressed I could be just over thinking it but I was told a long time ago there's no stupid questions but a unasked question Aaron |

Positive crankcase ventilation. Disconnect vac line and replace that port in the VC with a breather or plug it. The PCV valve is one way, so it may not matter. Lou |

That's what ~I~ did (just did away with the PCV system, entirely, since this is just a race engine in our car,) but a street version might benefit from a PCV setup; I dunno.... Aaron, do you plan to drive the Toad on the street at all? |

I still have my PCV hooked up, and have seen no ill effects. I should try disconnecting it at some point... Lou |

Bill and Lou thanks for the info the TOAD well see some street time for mostly tuning purposes I have a nice 15 min drive on the country back roads to work with a nice 1/2 straight away I plan on working on my hole shots Depending on the tuning process I'm about a hour away from Milan dragway and about a hour and a half from 131 I might beable to drive it to the track but will see Thanks again Aaron |

Aaron, I'm glad to hear that hole shots are a priority for you because that is the one place these cars seem to need help. I am going to do everything in my power to see to it that the car we're working on NEVER has to play catch-up to anybody we race , if they have a similar e.t., capability, because I feel that most races are won/lost in the first 60-feet, and these (turbo) cars all seem to have a problem with that, IF they have a problem, anywhere. I have a driving ambition to build into this car, a wheels-up capability that will deliver 60-foot times down in the 1.40s or better, and SHAME ON ME if I can't get that done! Talk's cheap; we'll see... LOL! Lots of help is available for quick launch times; we may need all of it!!! ![]() Bill, in Conway, Arkansas |

Yah Bill I no what U mean this is new to the both of us not racing but forced Induction and especially slant sixes I have a new turbo action transbrake that's setting in a box in the garage that I can't wait to install but I'm planning on have another trans built for that right now my rev pattern manual VB is going to have to do I'm glad you opened my eyes about the auto/manual transmission This little car is going to be a blast to drive I'm getting excited I have plans depending on how much work I can get done in the next couple weeks but I'm going to try and get to a test and tune on June 1 but will see so keep your fingers crossed Aaron |

Aaron, I think you're definitely on the right track, and I greatly admire your open-mindedness about the transmission issue. Most guys have so much EGO tied up in their car (combination) that they can't find it within themselves to make such a change (manual 4-speed to automatic) regardless of how much evidence is presented to the contrary. You are exceptional! And, I think it's going to pay off for you; I hope so!!! You have demonstrated that you have that the "whatever it takes" mindset that separates the winners from the rest of us... KUDOS to you! A trans brake will allow you to spool your turbo to the max before leaving the line for sure, and I frankly don't see a downside to using one, except for the strain they put on the drive train. I guess, if you're going to produce the kind of starting-line torque that will result in really quick 60-foot times, there's no way around that. It will be nice to be able to stall it "on the floor" and not worry about "pushing through the lights" on the starting line. I think these engines (like yours) probably can make upwards of 500 foot-pounds of torque, at full stall if your converter will allow a 3,500-rpm stall. That's big-block territory, and is going to require some chassis science to take full advantage of. I think we're probably going to spend some time swapping third members (gear ratios) and shock settings, to optimize available torque at the hit. Two things I DON'T want to do, is 1. add even one ounce of ballast to the back of the car, for obvious reasons, and 2. run a tire any wider than these 9"-wide slicks that we now have. I see pictures of (and, personally witness) NHRA Stock Eliminator A-Bodies (340/360 cars) pulling sizeable wheelies on 9" tires, with no ballast, If they can get that done with a steel hood and front bumper, it stands to reason that it's possible with a car like ours. Running a 10.5"-wide tire is out of the question, as far as I'm concerned; it would be like pulling a trailer, in 3rd gear... I hope you get your car running soon; I am WAY curious as to how it's going to perform, but at this stage, there are a LOT of "tuning" variables to deal with, so take your time and don't get impatient. We're going to start with about 5 pounds of boost, and work our way up in small increments... even 5 pounds can make a lot of difference, compared to N/A... Work on our fuel system is finished, and we're starting on the relays, switch-panels and other wiring this week. But, we're so slow, who knows how long that will take... ![]() Keep us updated! I'm really excited about the TOAD!!!! Bill |

I bet Ryan P is up around 600 ft-lbs (definitely 500+) and he launches HARD on 9" slicks. Lou |

Ryan's car is a HOSS!!! That car is our role model... goes way quicker and faster than it has any right to.... If our car will run within a full second of his car, I'll be really happy!!! I have watched this YouTube video of his car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QzUfV8iTpQ a hundred times... it always makes me smile!!! ![]() 127 MPH with a 727... Just amazing!!! Probably go 130 with a 904. Having said that, and this is on NO WAY, a criticism of Ryan's car, because it FLIES... consider, please, a car (belonged to a friend of mine; recently sold it) that also runs 127 MPH... but, instead of turning a 10.74, it runs 10.18.... It is also on 9" tires, but weighs 3,550 pounds... It's an A Stock Automatic '69 Camaro (425 hp.turbohydro, 400 automatic) and has 1.31 60-foot times, consistently. I don't have any hope of ever leaving the line THAT hard, but I'd definitely like some in the mid-1.4 range. Will I ever achieve that? Probably not... but, I'm gonna try. ![]() Bill |

Look closely at my pic,I still have a PCV system. The PCV valve is a one-way check valve, under boost,it will stay closed and cause no harm. |

Slantfan what do I have a the PCV plumbed into it looks like your turbine housing from the pickI just took a couple pics today of the turbo mounted and plumbed in with my oil and water lines I'm planning on doing some leak test in the next day or two ![]() ![]() Aaron |
