I always use very thin lines of that stuff, and by the time I am done putting pieces back together it is good to go.

I just replaced the water pump in my 60 V200. Put it all together, filled it with waterless coolant, hoped I could get away without the silicone sealant, nope, leaked, had to take it apart again today, and used the RTV Blue Ultra. Directions say it dries in 1 hour, but cures in 24. Q: Do I need to wait 24 hours to put the coolant back in the car, or do people ignore this, and replace coolant immediately? What are the results? Thanks guys |

RTV should not have been necessary to seal the water pump to the block; sounds like your gasket might not have been in adequate condition. How long did you wait after applying the RTV to install the pump? Correct usage means applying a thin bead of RTV, waiting 20-25 minutes or so for it to skin over, then assembling the parts. Once that's done, wait the remainder of the hour that starts from when you apply the RTV, then fill up the system and put it back in service. |

Don't know what to say. :shrug: The gasket was brand new and looked good. I also scraped the old gasket off the block and cleaned the mating surface carefully. I inspected it before re-assembly and saw no pitting or anything that should make it leak, yet it did. I did use a relatively thin bead of RTV. I didn't wait for it to skin over, as the directions did not state to wait, but to assemble immediately. But, I have waited for it to cure, and by the time I will fill it back with coolant, I'll be close to the full 24HR cure time. |

Unbelievable. It's leaking already. Basically, just like it did before, a very slow drip, from the bottom side. I haven't really torqued the bottom bolts down hard but using the sealer, I shouldn't have to, should I? What did I do wrong? I didn't put the RTV on a completely and utterly dry gasket (I had run it previously with coolant), but I was told the gasket didn't have to be absolutely dry, just not torn. BS advice? Sidenote: I used Permatex RTV Blue, not RTV Blue Ultra. I've been reading on other vehicle forums that people have had quite a bit of trouble using the regular RTV Blue. I did use a thin bead and surrounded all bolt holes. What should I do? Spent the better part of a day draining and removing everything, putting the sealer on and replacing all the equipment. Frustrating! |

I have tried a lot of different brands of RTV. With most of them, the best I can achieve is a horrendous mess, a leaking junction, and a do-over of the task. The only RTV compounds that I've been consistently able to get good results with are the black and the grey Mopar stuff, and the aluminum-coloured Valco. Bolts must be torqued to spec regardless of whether you use RTV, so try that. Then verify that your leak is coming from the gasket junction and not from the shaft seal weep hole. |
