I am shopping for some tires for one of my family's cars and came across this article discussing the date code on the side of tires. This is info everyone should be familiar with and I thought it was worth posting a link to the article:

That's important. Most people have zero knowledge or understanding of how substantially tires degrade with age, no matter how little they are used. Most
people just don't think about it. Fact is, tires do degrade significantly with age. This is especially true if they have been hit with a lot of UV (sunshine) and/or they've been in an area with relatively high ground-level ozone either due to general pollution or because they've been near electrical transmission lines, electric motors, etc. Usually the degradation is invisible long after it becomes critical, until it has reached very advanced stages and you start getting visible cracks in the rubber. Driving on public roadways with age-degraded tires can only be described as foolhardy, no matter how not-very-often or not-very-far it is done.

The spare tire most of us carry, being over two years old, is in fact really unsafe for anything more than one slow, short trip to the nearest tire shop.
