Post subject: | Mini Starter Wiring |
Anyone have suggestions on wiring up to a mini starter? I have a 61 Lancer wagon with the stock 61 starter. |

A mini starter will physically NOT work in your '61. First year it works in is '62, unless you want to get into replacing the '61 torque converter or flywheel with a '62-up item or digging up very difficult-to-find custom parts to make a mini starter work in a pre-'62 car. |

Should be the same 2 wire setup. Are you asking about the little post/angle thing that comes on the starter? Or does yours have a plug.My 62 has a mini/Dakota starter, and my wifes 63 has a mini/ also, and it went in like the stock one. Hope I helped. Andrew/Kidd |

Starter circuit is different on '60-'61 cars, but it's not difficult to rework the circuit to accommodate the later starter setup. The physical incompatibility is the (much) bigger issue. |

Wow, wasn't aware of such a vast differance. Is the starter ring similar to that of the early Hemi? May have to alter my plans on the exhaust. Was originally going to use the two Dutra exhaust manifolds. That required the use of a mini starter. I may just go with the single exhaust along with the 2X 1barrel setup. Thanks for the heads-up |

It isn't impossible, it's just not a direct bolt-on. |

No, not impossible. Just a little more than I anticipated

If I recall, the 60-61 cars had a big Prestolite (?) direct drive starter. Beginning in 62 Chrysler used their own reduction drive unit. I'd imagine that they had different flywheel/ flexplate tooth counts for the two types. I'm sure Dan can say if there was any difference in the bellhousing mounting point. |

Correct on all counts, WagonsRCool. The starter mounting is the same, but the ring gear diameter and tooth count differ between the direct-drive and gear-reduction starter setups. |

I know I'm being bad but hear me out. If you bolt on a later flywheel that was made for a mini starter does that allow it to bolt up and function properly on a slant? I am actually asking more for the other inline sixes that used the direct drive starter for decades, the mopar flathead sixes. This would mean I could possibly put a 10" diaphragm clutch on my uncles flat-head along with a mini starter. |
