Alright, well I have been searching around but couldn't find a clear answer. If my initial timing is 10* btdc and it stops advancing when it gets to 23* at 2500 rpm. Does that mean I add the 10 initial to the 23 and I have a total of 33? This is all the the vaccum advance plugged off. I know it's a dumb question but thanks. |

Ok thanks. So I only have 13* mechanical. I'm shooting for 30 total, so I guess I will be taking the distributor apart and opening up the slots a bit. |

Try it at a higher rpm...it may seem to stop at 13...but at 4000, or even 5000 rpm it may give you 2+ more degrees... if so, you won't need to open the slots but adjust the spring perches to have the spring tension come on sooner, or replace one spring or the other with a lighter tensionspring... Also since you have a fair amount of room in advance, you can see if the engine runs better at 12-14BTDC initial (sometimes not, but it's an easy set/reset experiment). Compounded on this though is your vacc. advance, you will need to make sure in the pursuit of mechanical timing curve changes that the vacc. advance doesn't add more timing than your engine would like at a given time (i.e. part throttle). -D.Idiot |

Thanks for the advice. I have been test driving my slant with a supercharger and I haven't even hooked up the vacuum advance. Kinda worried about getting too much. |

What you have to do kinda depends on where your distributor came from & what's been done to it before. Some stock units had a secondary spring so heavy that it acted as a travel stop until you got over 4000 or so. |

I will have to ask Doug, he put this one together for me a few years ago. Haha I hope he remembers. |

Seeing that this is a new set-up with a supercharger, just bump-up your initial to 13 degrees, for a toal of 26 and see how that works. If you find that you have no high RPM knocking / pinging, keep giving it more initial, until you find where it pings, then back-off a couple of degrees and adjust the springs / slots to get the inital timing setting that works best. Thanks Doug. I was going to chat with you yesterday at ohlone, but didn't see you there. Hope everything is going well. |
