Rebuilt carter bbs. After a good 45min highway drive parking on a fairly steep driveway, I heard sizzling. Noticed gas was pouring out the small hole on the driver side new the base of the carb. It might have been coming out the rear of the shaft as well. Hard to tell if it was because It might have been from the small hole running back from the incline. I have float level set between 7/32 and 1/4. And also I notice that when car has sat for a good while when things are cold, it takes a long time to start back up again, like there is no fuel in the bowl. Its either boiling or some how leaking past something... any ideas I also cannot get rid of a flat spot right off of idle. Checked for vacuum leaks, carb squirts good, tried messing with accelerator pump rod adjustment, doesn't change anything. New distributor. Mixture screw is set from closed to where idle stops rising. Tried extra rich and also extra lean. Nothing gets rid of the damn flat spot. Timing is at 5deg and at about 800rpm I believe |

Do the Fuel line mod and you may also want to make a heat shield for the carburetor bowl. How's your vacuum advance hooked up? |

800 is mighty high. You want to be South of 600. |

There's more then one way to hook it up? It's straight from carb over valve cover down to dist |

Hooked up to the passenger side of the carb. Also found out carb is not boiling dry. Choke gets stuck open for some reason needs to be shook loose. But it was leaking out that hole and sizzling on the manifold. |

Still have the flat spot issue I keep screwing with mixture and pump adjustments and nothing works :-C |

Mixture is for idle only. Are you using the "mushroom" air cleaner?Are you hearing a whistle when it hits the flat spot? |

The stock air cleaner on some of the old ones was the open element type no snorkel. They caused flat spots in some way. |

The only stock open-element air cleaner was the one used only on the 1962 170 engine. Quote: They caused flat spots in some way.
No, they didn't (and don't).The flat spot means something's wrong with the carburetor and/or distributor. |

OK Dan what would you call the ones without the snorkel? Got a pic of the open element air cleaner? What problem did they cause? |
