Post subject:  Electric fan cut in/cut out temp?
Hi. I have just converted my '66 slant six mechanical fan to electric fan. Rite now im using a 185F/205F thermo switch for the fan i.e. The fan switch on at 205 deg and switch off at 185 deg. With this setup, the OEM temp gauge shows about 2/3 when the fan cuts in and about 1/2 when the fan cuts out. I dont know how accurate the temp gauge is, but I think I can trust the thermo switch. is it OK to run our slant six at 200F? Or would you suggest i use a 165/185F thermo switch instead? Thanks. Syed

Your setpoints are very close to what I would suggest as a starting point, and your temp gauge suggests they're close to optimal, but I'm curious what kind of thermostat you're running. Is it a 180° unit? If so (and it should be), then yes, I'd say leave the fan settings right where they are.

Someone suggested to me ages ago that a 160F thermostat would be more suitable for the tropical climate I'm inn so that's what I have in there. Now after using the car for almost 2 years, I think the factory 180F stat would get the engine up to operating temp faster. Should I get the 180 stat?

Your friend's suggestion was wrong, 160° is not better, it's considerably worse for everything from engine wear to fuel economy. Put the correct 180° thermostat back in and leave the fan setpoints where they are.

Ok, will get the 180 stat then. What brand do you recommend? I've seen ACDelco, Stant, MotorRad, parts master, MrGasket, Trust/Gates etc.

BTW I have a female "socket" at the top RH corner of the radiator. What is that sensor for? As far as I know, the '66 Slant six did not come with the electric fan.

What about the smaller sensor beside the thermostat housing? Is that the sensor for the Temp Gauge in the dash?

Looks like part of someone's attempt to add an electric fan to this radiator at some time in the past.

Also looks like the fan is not large enough, but if it's holding the engine temperature to an acceptable level and the A/C works OK, then I guess it's big enough!

Its a 12-inch fan. I tried putting a 16" fan but the "motor" was touching the pulley, even a 14" fan wont fit. This 12" fan barely fits with about 1/2" clearance between the four bolt head on the pulley and the fan motor. And im sure you noticed the fan is offset to the top instead of at the center of the rad, also due to clearance issue.

As for your second point, yes the A/C is freezing and temp gauge never exceed 2/3 on the OEM gauge and I can hear the fan cut in (and out) so i guess im OK there.

There's a seller on ebay that always has a set of 9" electric fans for cheap... AggressiveTed has a bunch of pictures of them on his /6. I've been considering making the swap myself.

Bought the 358 Stant Superstat off Ebay last nite (impossible to find it at my local store) and its on its way, with tracking number and all :)
